Golden Archer Book Award lesson can done whenever it best fits in February. Votes just need to be submitted to WEMTA by March 1st.
Lesson 1: Golden Archer Award
Go through the Google Slide show to explain to students about our Golden Archer state of Wisconsin book award. Share the primary books that are up for the award. Then have students vote for the Primary category. There is a form at the end of the slideshow, but for the younger students a raise of hands and tallying their votes usually works the best.
Lesson 2: Valentines Story- Recalling Story Elements
Discuss how we have a holiday coming up- Valentines Day. Read or listen to Penguin in Love by Salina Yoon. Have students create a penguin valentine. Running short on time, print the penguin template with all pieces on one page. Students can color, cut and glue to make their penguin.
Lesson 3: Relationship with the Pictures to the Text
Before reading tell students they are going to be very carefully looking at the pictures today. Discuss how pictures help to tell a story. Read Izzy Gizmo by Pip Jones to the students. After you are done reading discuss what the pictures showed/told them that the words did not. Discuss how Izzy was an inventor. Explain what inventors do and go to Pebble Go to show to access the Inventor section. Give students time to explore Inventors in Pebble Go.
Extension:
Put out building materials and tell the students to build a gadget.
Read Izzy Gizmo Invention Convention by Pip Jones.
Lesson 4: Text and Illustrations
Read Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson or another favorite picture book and discuss how the text and illustrations support each other to tell the story.
Activities
Students can help you write sentence to support the illustration on the worksheet.
Students can create a snow day story by writing a sentence to support the illustrations and creating an illustration to support the text. This could be done as a whole group activity or individually.
