Lesson 1: Using Destiny to Find Library Books for ME
Review with students how to use Destiny to search for books. Project Destiny on panel, typing in your own search or asking students for suggestions. Point out where to find call numbers based on your building, as well as whether the book is available or not. If needed, review how library is organized. (See example of call number review, make a copy and tweak for your building) Give students time to search for book using Destiny before checking out. Facilitate and assist as needed.
Lesson 2: Using Destiny to Read Online
Focus this lesson on using Destiny to find ebooks students can access 24/7. Review the difference between the LIghtbox titles (all nonfiction, more interactive) verus other typical ebooks (basically scanned pages of a book, some will read aloud). Show students how to use the different features of books, how to check them out and return them. Give students time to explore these books on their own.
Lesson 3: Story Elements Project in Google Slides
Let the students know that they will be starting a project using Google Slides where they will retell a story using the story elements of the story. Project Story Elements video linked below for a review. Once the video is over, show students the google slides template that they are going to be completing on a specific book between this library and the next library. LMT may want to review how to type into a slide and insert images. The slideshow can be assigned in Google Classroom, setting it to make a copy for each student, or allow students to create their own, with each story element from the video on the slide. As a Halloween themed project, one option would be to link the following read alouds in Google Classroom; Creepy Crayon!, Creepy Carrots! and Creepy Pair of Underwear! by Aaron Reynolds and let students pick which they would like to complete their slides about. During this class they can be expected to choose their book, listen to the read aloud, and then begin completing google slide. Depending on how far the class gets, the LMT can view progress and make comments or suggestions for the student to view before next library.
Lesson 4: Finish Story Elements Project in Google Slides and Inserting Image Tech Tip!
Review with students the project from last library. If the LMT was able to make comments or suggestions on student slides, model what that would look like for them. Additionally, student will have noticed that inserting images from google built into slides will not give specific images from the books if they would like to use those for any of the story elements, especially if they want a picture of Jasper Rabbit. If you feel comfortable with them searching images in a separate tab, you can either show the linked video on how to pull images in from another tab, or, after watching if yourself, model for students on how to do so. When having students pull in images, also have them copy in the link address in the same way, either on a new slide or in the notes of the slide the image is going on. Let them know this is how we can give credit to the website we got the picture from. Have students continue to add to their google slide. If they finish adding all words and images for each element they can further personalize their google slides by changing background colors and fonts and/or share their slide with another student that is also finished.
