Lesson 1: Library Introduction
Watch 'Library' Brainpop Jr. video. Go through your slideshow of expectations and explain how your library works. Here are some samples- make a copy of one you like and tweak to fit your library. Leave 5-15 minutes for book checkout at the end.
Lesson 2: Taking care of the library, where to put books, keeping shelves neat New book and discuss difference in fiction vs nonfiction call number
Read The Book that Jake Borrowed by Susan Holt Kralovansky. Review book care rules. Bring students on a tour of the library, maybe featuring a few titles from each section. As you walk around the library, remind students that call numbers beginning with "E" are in found in the Everybody section of the library, while call numbers beginning with "FIC" are found in the chapter book section. This is important for when you are getting books to check out. Gather students around one of the bookshelves and discuss proper ways to use shelf marker, keeping shelves neat, and where to put books that you no longer want. After check out, you may also show the Book Care video if time permits.
Lesson 3: Using Technology in Third Grade- Digital Ethics and Book Creator
Use this interactive book on Book Creator to teach students how to use. Pull this book up on the board and also share a copy with them (using a code is the best way to allow them to join). They will work on pages as you go through the book. This book is going to focus on a few topics that need to be reviewed with third graders.
Staying on Assigned sites and work and being respectful
Camera Use
Microphone Use (besides focusing on using this appropriately, you may want to go over speaking and recording clearly)
Not touching others technology
Trying out Book Creator and modeling how to use tech for a school project
If you have a shorter class (under 30) you may want to do this lesson for two weeks.
Lesson 4: Library Procedures Review- Bingo
Read a Never Let A Ghost Borrow Your Library Book by Karen Casale. This will review the book care tips that were covered in week 2. When done- review the parts of the library with them from week 2 (fiction, non-fiction, biography, everyone and so on). Review any other vocab/topics that are on the bingo card. Cards were made at this site in case you would like to tweak them to fit your library.
