Lesson 1: Review Searching Destiny and Text Features
Review how to search Destiny. Model author, title, and subject search with them. Review how to read the Destiny record with students- call number, book summary, in/out. You can turn on your annotate feature on your board and have students come to the board and circle these parts as well. Also, remind students that books are organized by section in the library. (Everybody books=E; Chapter books=FIC, Dewey=Nonfiction) Students can then complete the Call Number Turkey sheet.
Library Extension (if time allows): Students can go to Shelver and practice their call numbers.
Lesson 2: Text features
Students will need a Chromebook for this lesson. Review how to get to PebbleGo, via ClassLink. Briefly review the features of PebbleGo and explain that this resource can be used to learn about the various subjects, such as animals, science, social studies, and biographies. Explain that we will be using the social studies section today. Have students keyword search the Pebble Go: Thanksgiving article and read it. Students then will complete this Thanksgiving trifold. Depending on the ability level of your students, you may need to work on filling out the trifold as a group, or using the jigsaw strategy. If students are high ability, they can fill it in independently.
Lesson 3: Using Pebble GO Next
Tell students that today they are going to use a different version of Pebble Go called Pebble Go Next. Model for students on how to get to the article on the Wampanoag Tribe. (Native American Indians >Northeast Tribal Nations >Wampanoag) Show students the linked Pebble Go sheet, reading through each question, explaining that when we research, we should have specific questions in mind to help guide our learning. Have the students listen to the each category and then answer the questions together as a whole class. Talk about what kind of text features or text structure helped us find the information.
Lesson 4: Memory Jar
After reading Memory Jar by Vera Brosgol, have students reflect on a fond memory they have about someone important to them. Have them draw a picture or write it down. If time permits, invite students to share their memories with the class.
