Golden Archer Book Award lesson can done whenever it best fits in February. Votes just need to be submitted to WEMTA by March 1st.
Lesson 1: Golden Archer Book Award
Go through the Google Slide show to explain to students about our Golden Archer state of Wisconsin book award. Share the primary and intermedidate books that are up for the award. Then have students vote for the Primary category. There are forms for each at the end of the slideshow. Make a copy and you can share in Google Classroom or on your webpage.
Lesson 2: Important Person Timeline
Now that students have created a personal timeline in Canva, they are going to research an important person in history and create a timeline for them in Canva. Students can create one from scratch or use one of the many templates available. To up the rigor of this assignment students should NOT be allowed to use PebbleGo as the articles all already have timelines attached. Additionally, you could also require students to use 2 different online resources to find the information, making sure to include citations, copied directly from the resource. Students can choose a person from their Quarter 3 ELA research site or choose one on their own using a resources like World Almanac Kids Elementary as a good alternative to PebbleGo. This timeline will be embedded into the 'Important People in History' collective biography in later weeks. Students can either put their person's information directly into the timeline template on Canva, or use the note catcher below.
This video is a few years old so Canva has updated the look slightly, this is more of a teacher resource than one to be shared with students, it would be best to model it yourself.
Lesson 3: Important People in History Collective Biography in Book creator
Now that students each have a person they created a timeline for, they are going to be combining timelines and information into a collective biography with others in the class that chose different people. LMT may want to pass out examples of collective biographies for students to look through to help understand what a collective biography is. Another option to introduce topic would be to show 'Courageous People Who Changed the World' Vooks from Discovery Education. Each student will need to add the following to their page in Book Creator:
Timeline from Canva (done similarly to last month's book mark lesson)
Heading with their person's name
Picture of person
A brief description of WHY their person was important
LMT can group students or let students choose their group to work collaboratively on a book (LMT will need to make sure that option is turned on in settings) The book should also include a citation page with what resources they obtained their information from, as well as 'Photo Credit' (url or name of website) from any pictures taken from Google Images
Lesson 4: Continue Collective Biography
Have students continue working on their collective biographies, facilitating as needed. Students that finish can share our their books.
