Lesson 1: Genres Book Tasting
Begin discussing what a Genre is. Show YouTube video below or slides linked below to go over Fiction genres. Once the video or presentation is done, create a list of the genres discussed for reference. Let the class know that know they will get to preview books from some of those genres. For each table, have a set of books, one from the following genres; Realistic, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Mystery, and Historical for the students to preview. Once students have previewed, they can color their 'Book Personality' paper and search for a book to check out from their genre. Start Google Slides project (if continuing) As an exit slip, students can also answer a question posted on Google Classroom with their 'Book Personality' or LMT can make a list on their own.
Extension Activity:
Play this Genre Kahoot! with students using either Chromebooks or iPads if you request the Kahoot! app to be downloaded.
Lesson 2: Using Destiny to Find Library Books for ME
Remind students on how to use Destiny by pulling it up on your panel or showing video linked below. Connect back to last week's Genre discussion to point out that they could search by genre in Destiny Discover as well. (1st Quarter is Realistic Fiction for 5th if you would like to use that as an example) Review with students what the different call number will mean when they show up in the search. (E for picture books, Fic for chapter, etc). Modify to meet the needs of your students and library organization.
Extension Activity:
Link 'Mrs. Hodges Shelver Game' in Google Classroom or project on board to have students practice shelving books
Lesson 3: Where can I read online?
Ask students where they can go on Classlink to read online. Most students will probably mention Epic which is a great resource, just not a district one and would be available to students for limited days/hours (7am-3pm Monday-Friday) and is dependent on their teacher creating a class. Remind students there are ebooks in Destiny and Overdrive that are available 24/7 as long as they log in through Classlink from home. After previewing each app for students you can give them time to explore on their own, facilitating as needed to make sure students are able to get themselves in to their desired app. At the end, an optional activity would be to post a question in the Google Classroom asking what app they used and what book they may have started.
Lesson 4: Cauldron Makerspace Activity
This can be broken up into two class periods (1 to plan/design, 1 to build/test) or modified for one class to build and test. To see complete directions and access materials click the link to the right.
Students will work in groups of 2-3 to create a device to hang their cauldron (dixie cup) from. Each group will have 10 straws, 1 dixie cup, 1 ft of string, 2 ft of tape, scissors and marbles. The cauldron hanger that can hold the most marbles before touching the table will be the 'winner'.
