Golden Archer Book Award lesson can done whenever it best fits in February. Votes just need to be submitted to WEMTA by March 1st.
Lesson 1: Golden Archer Award
Go through the Google Slide show to explain to students about our Golden Archer state of Wisconsin book award. Share the primary books that are up for the award. Then have students vote for the Primary category. There is a form at the end of the slideshow, but for the younger students a raise of hands and tallying their votes usually works the best.
Lesson 2: Valentine Story and Craft
Read Hedgehugs by Steve Wilson and Lucy Tapper. Discuss all the different ways Hattie and Horace come up with to give each other a hug. Can students come up with any other ways?
Create a handprint hedgehog to give to someone special.
Lesson 3: Compare/Contrast Stories- Three Billy Goats Gruff
Read The Three Billy Goats Gruff by Jerry Pinkney. Now explain we are going to read another version of this fairy tale- The Three Billy Goats Fluff by Racherl Mortimer. Tell students to listen carefully for how the two stories are the same and how they are different. After reading compare and contrast the stories (if you have a newer panel you can use the venn diagram feature). Students can then complete the sheet to complete the story and color.
Lesson 4: STEM Challenge
Students can design a bridge for the goats to cross safely from the troll. You can use building materials (blocks, legos, knex) or they could build out of paper, cardboard, cardboard tubes, straws, and other materials. Goats/props to copy and add to creations.
Create a raft out for the trolls to get across the stream safely. Fill up a plastic container and students can test to see if their raft floats. Brainstorming sheet
