Lesson 2: How to Read a Book and Take Care of It
Read This Book is Perfect by Ron Keres. Discuss what happened in the story. Student will watch How to Take Care of Books. Pause and discuss what the girls are doing right and wrong. Show students the book hospital. Then go through the Google Slide book- Animals Should Definitely Not Borrow Books
Extension Activity (if time allows):
Caring for books - Book Care Rules coloring page
Lesson 3: Using Illustrations to Tell the Story
Read Shiver Me Letters: A Pirate ABC by June Sobel. Discuss how fiction books are organized by author's last name in ABC order. Students can then go on an ABC quest for author's last name using books set out at tables. For example, LMT could put a set of books at one table with author's last name starting A-D, set two could be E-H, etc. Students will cross off the letters they find on an ABC Quest chart. LMT discretion whether students rotate tables or stay at one table. Once students have found all the letters from their sheet (or from the books on their table), they can preview the books.
Lesson 4: Balancing Apple STEM Challenge
Read Ten Apples Up On Top by Dr. Seuss (under Theo LeSieg). After reading let students know that they are now going to have to figure our how to balance one apple - on the tip of their finger. Give each student one apple printed on cardstock to color as they would like and cut. Explain that they will be using two clothespins to help them balance the apple. Have students make predictions about where they think the clothespins should go on the apple to help keep it balanced. If you would like, use a chart to to share hypothesis if you would like (see link below) or simply share out while working as a whole group or have students work individually, in pairs or groups depending on the class.
