Lesson 1: Identifying a Problem
Read I Stink by Kate & Jim McMullan. Ask students what it would be like if we did not take care or our trash or towns? Explain that this could become a big problem if we did not recycle and take care of our trash. Watch Reduce, Reuse, and Recyle on Brain Pop Jr. Brainstorm ways that we can help our environment to make sure our city does not turn into Mt. Trasharama.
Activity 1 - Work as a group to follow directions and complete this activity either at the Promethean Panel or at their seats. I Stink! following directions activity.
Activity 2 - Earth Day book Print off one copy for each student. Books will need to be assembled.
Lesson 2: Researching a Problem
Go to Pebble Go- Social Studies-People and the Environment- Helping the Environment. Ask students which one they are interested in (Caring for Nature, Cleaning Up Litter, Global Climate Strike, Reusing and Recycling, Saving Energy, Saving Water) researching. Go through a few of them. As a class then brainstorm how we can do these things to help.
Lesson 3: Researching and Using Digital Tools to Create
Students will create posters to remind other students to take care of our Earth. Have students create and draw their posters on paper. Students can then can take a picture of their poster with the iPad. (It could be a picture of the student with their poster or just the poster) The LMT can then create a way to share the pictures (Google Slide, Adobe Spark, iMovie, Book Creator). LMT can use whatever tech tool they are comfortable with.
Lesson Extension:
Take students out to clean up the playground/school yard.
You can even have students hang their posters up around school to share.
