Lesson 1: Review Library Expectations
Take some time to review your library expectations. Read The Library Book by Tom Chapin. If time, use the Hello Crayon app on the iPads to draw the cover of their favorite book or to draw their favorite place in the library.
Lesson 2: Introduction to Polar Animal Research
Discuss with students that they are going to be picking an Polar animal and complete research using Pebble Go. Model how to do this research. Go over the super 3 research steps. Use the presentation to model and explain the research process. All resources are linked in slides (research note sheet and video). If time, have students select a polar animal from slide 5. Students can begin researching if time or just write down the name of the polar animal they want to learn more about.
**If individual research is too difficult for a particular class you could always research one polar animal as a group.
Lesson 3: Continue or Begin Research in Pebble Go
Students will use Pebble Go to continue or begin researching their polar animal. Pebble Go is on all library ipads. Model how to use a keyword search to find their animal (stress sounding out the word and using our ABC's). They will use this note taking sheet to take notes on their animal using Pebble Go for information .
Lesson 4: Continue with Polar Animal Research/Project or Wordless Picture Book
Talk about how pictures help to tell the story. Read The Little Red Cat Who Ran Away and Learned His ABCs the Hard Way by Patrick McDonnell. Students can then complete the activity by choosing a letter of the alphabet and drawing a picture to either go along with the story or draw a picture of their choice.
Extra Lesson
Lesson 5: Virtual Field Trip- Tundra Field Trip
Read How to Ride a Polar Bear by Caryl Hart (or any other fun polar bear story). Tell the students now that we are going to travel to a tundra to see real polar bears! Using Discovery Education show the first two segments of the virtual field trip (if time allows you can show more). There is a built in video quiz feature that will ask questions you put in as you play the video if you would like to do that with your students.
