Lesson 1: Finding Animal Books for Research on Destiny
Students will be using Destiny to search for animal books to be used for their research projects in class. Using the Chromebook, have students search for the animal that they will be researching. Introduce Boolean operators-AND, OR, NOT, to make your search more precise. For example, to search animal books that are not fiction books, they should type in bears and nonfiction. That way, they will only get nonfiction books on bears, no fiction books. (If you want a refresher Boolean operators, you can read up on it here.) Have students do their search and look for two different books that they can use for research. After they fill out the information, have them find the two books on the shelves. Note: Make copies of the Destiny Search: Animal Research worksheet and cut in half.
Lesson 2: Using Google Slides
Go to Google Slides via google Slides in ClassLink and demonstrate how to use the basic functions in Google Slides. Have students open a new Google slideshow and have them title it "About me-Name." Students will not be picking out a layout this time, so they can just close the Layout box. Have the students add the following slides: About Me, Basic Info, Favorite Things, Interesting Facts, Thank you for watching. Students should spend the rest of the time filling out information on each slide.
*The video is not necessarily to show students, but more of a guide for you to teach Slides. However, you can do both! Stop the video at 3:53 for this portion of the lesson. The rest of the lesson will be used for next library class.
Lesson 3: Google Slides, con't
In this lesson, students will continue working on their slideshows adding transitions and animations. Again, the video is not intended teach the skills, but for you to use as a guide. However, you show the video to the students. Start the video at 3:53. If time permits, you may have students further personalize their presentation by using the camera or inserting images.
**Feel free to customize your lesson by choose certain features, as some students may already know how to make slides. If this is the case, maybe just show them how to insert transition and animations.
Note: You may want to have the students share their presentation with you so that you could pull up their slideshows to present for the next class. Otherwise, if you are using Google Classroom, have students turn in their slideshows so that you could easily access them for presenting.
Lesson 4: Google Slides Presentations
Have each student present their slideshow to either the class or in small groups.
