Golden Archer Book Award lesson can done whenever it best fits in February. Votes just need to be submitted to WEMTA by March 1st.
Lesson 1: Golden Archer Book Award
Go through the Google Slide show to explain to students about our Golden Archer state of Wisconsin book award. Share the primary books that are up for the award. Then have students vote for the Primary category. There is a form at the end of the slideshow, but for the younger students a raise of hands and tallying their votes usually works the best.
Lesson 2: Sequencing and retelling a story
Read Froggy's First Kiss by Jonathan London
Students complete sequencing worksheet. Please note, page # does not have the supporting sentences. If students need additional support, have them use page 3.
In pairs, students retell each other the story using transitional phases such as first, next, then and finally.
Extension Activity: Valentine Bookmark craft (You can use construction paper instead of foam.)
Lesson 3: Introduce Biographies
Introduce what a Biography is and the call number. Read My Itty-Bitty Bio: Maya Angelou and model filling out the biography graphic organizer. Then, explain to the students that they will be researching a person and filling out a biography graphic organizer on that person.
Invite students to go to PebbleGo > Biographies > History Makers > Civil Rights . From there, have the students choose a person from one of the Civil Rights categories (for Black History month) to research. They can work in pairs or individually and fill out the Biography graphic organizer.
They will continue to work on this same biography for the next lesson.
Lesson 4: Biographies, con't
Students will begin filling out the Biography graphic organizer.
When completed, have students hang their biographies in chronological order (based on event year) and share their learning.
In conclusion, have students discuss why these people were so important and how they continue to impact us today.
