**Teachers may still be finishing up with the Q2 research project, please support them anyway you see fit. The below lessons compliment the research process as well as meet standards.
Lesson 1: How Social Media Effects You - Review of Expectations
Use the attached slide to go over the effects and expectations of using social media. This could also be used to tie in real world/library expectations of being safe, responsible and respectful after coming back from winter break.
Lesson 2: Winter Escape Room
As a whole class or in groups, have students complete the linked Winter Escape Room. I have recreated a modified version of this from 2024 into a KUSD google site so students should be able to access it if you link into your google classroom. You may want to provide scrap paper for students to use to work through problems and/or write down the answers for each section as they will need to enter all answers on one form at the end to 'escape'. Attached is also a hard copy you could print for students to write down the locks.
Lesson 3: Intro/Review of Creating Bookmarks in Canva
Students will create a bookmark of their choice (school appropriate). Some ideas could be a winter or 'Friendship' theme that could be colored in by other students, or popular book, TV, movie characters. Model for students as much as necessary on how to create a bookmark and add images, shapes, and/or text. Additionally, students could also create a bookmark based on their research topic from Quarter 2.
Instructions on how to print out multiple bookmarks on one page to hand back to students:
Students should download finished bookmark as a jpeg file. Once it is downloaded they will paste it into a blank google slide linked in Google Classroom. 3-4 bookmarks would fit on one slide, LMT would just need to create one slideshow that all students can edit, with enough slides for the class. It would be important to remind students that they should only add their work, not attempt to edit, add, or delete from anyone else's work.
Lesson 4: Review of Citations for a Bibliography
Show Brainpop video ‘Citing Sources’ using Set 1 of Pause Points to aid discussion and check for knowledge. You may want to point out that not all websites will have every piece of information, highlighting the fact that even in their example some pieces were left out because they weren’t necessary. It may also be helpful to students to talk about WHERE on the ‘website’ they are finding this information. (You could even stop it at about 4min35sec or at the last pause point with the video). Now that they have an idea of what kind of information is needed to cite a source, they are going to be working on citing sources. Introduce the organizer if using it, pointing out the pieces of information to look for, the highlighted pieces are those that should be found and are important. If students have websites they actually used during their research, or are able to quickly help you find an example online, you can use one to model how to fill out the organizer. If you would rather use a generic site to model and have the kids do the same you can use the sites linked in the organizer. You can complete both together or have students work on their own. Additionally, you can print out the organizer to have students write on, or attach a digital copy for students to complete in google classroom.
