**Teachers may be finishing up the Q2 research project on weather, please support them in any way you see fit. The below lessons will compliment the research process as well as meet standards.
Lesson 1: Breakout EDU Activity: Natural Hazards
Assign the link below to students in google classroom to have them work in partners or groups. You could also complete as a class. If having students do it independently together you may want to model how to maneuver through the site.
Lesson 2: STEM with Natural Disasters
Now that students are wrapping up their natural disaster project, they will use Scratch Jr on the iPads to code a scenario revolving their natural disaster. Examples could be as simple as drawing their disaster as a 'character' and then programming it to move across the screen and leave a path of destruction in its wake. Students could also create 'characters' that represent the elements necessary to create a disaster and then program them to have an image of the disaster shown on screen.
OR
Students could use building materials (Legos, Rokenboks, magnetic tiles) to create a structure that would be the best fit based on their natural disaster. Students can work in groups with others that researched the same disaster. Examples - strong bases for those who studied earthquakes, maybe structures on stilts for those that researched flooding, tsunamis, low structures for tornadoes, etc.
Lesson 3: Let's Give Credit (Common Sense Media)
Follow the lesson plan to discuss the importance of giving credit when researching and using pictures for school. This can be connected back to their Natural Disaster project. Common Sense Media has this listed as a second grade skill and includes the grade on all of its handouts and slides. Below the link to the lesson are copies of the slideshow and 'Let's Give Credit' Handout with it modified to say Grade 4.
Lesson 4: Intro to Canva and Bookmark Template
Let students know that they will be using even another tool to create digital work - Canva. After watching the linked tutorial yourself, model for students how to access and use canva, along with finding the bookmark template. Their challenge today will be to create a timeline bookmark about themselves.
Instructions on how to print out multiple bookmarks on one page to hand back to students:
Students should download finished bookmark as a jpeg file. Once it is downloaded they will paste it into a blank google slide linked in Google Classroom. 3-4 bookmarks would fit on one slide, LMT would just need to create one slideshow that all students can edit, with enough slides for the class. It would be important to remind students that they should only add their work, not attempt to edit, add, or delete from anyone else's work.
