Lesson 1: Introduction to the Library
Discuss how we behave in the library and what rules we should follow. Go through your slideshow of expectations and explain how your library works. (See samples below- make a copy and tweak to fit your library). Leave 5-15 minutes for book checkout at the end.
Extension Activity (if time allows) -
Funny Library Montage (video)
Lesson 2: Technology Care/Expectations and Google Classroom
Show linked slide below to review expectations. The original district slideshow is linked at the end. Let students know now that they have heard all of the expectations of their Chromebook they will sign a technology pledge to agree to follow them. Have students log into their Chromebook and add themselves to the already created library Google Classroom (Create one google classroom for each teacher at grade level or one for each grade level, whichever you feel comfortable with). Once in the classroom they will have the link to complete technology pledge (see example below, make copy). You can have them do this independently or go through each question as a group.
Lesson 3: Choose a Strong Password!
Tell the class that today they will get to choose their new password for this year. Using the district slideshow provided, go through the presentation to discuss why we need passwords and what should/should not be included in the password. By the end of the lesson students should have chosen a new password and either handed it in to you on an index card or entered it into a google form (see form below to click on and make a copy to tweak for your school) linked in their google classroom. If using google forms make sure to print out passwords for students before the next library.
Extension Activity:
Once students have chosen their password have them go to 'Password Protect' from Digital Passport. You can direct them to search for it themselves or link directly to it in Google Classroom.
Lesson 4: Change Your Password!
Remind students that last week they chose their new password they will use to log into their Chromebook. This week they will change their password using Classlink. Show presentation linked to the left OR connect a Chromebook to your board and have a volunteer complete the steps as you explain them. (Passwords will not be projected, they will be dotted out for privacy). When ready, pass out the index cards students created last library or the passwords you printed from the google form spreadsheet. You can have the class work through the steps with you or watch as you and your volunteer model, then complete the steps on their own while you move about the room, offering help when needed. Make sure students log out once their password was changed, then log in again to make sure it will work.
Extension Activity:
Create an exit slip requiring students to enter their password into a question posed on Google Classroom to verify they changed their password correctly. Once students have changed their password have them go to 'Password Protect' from Digital Passport. You can direct them to search for it themselves or link directly to it in Google Classroom..
