Lesson 1: Let's Organize the Library!
Discuss how your library is laid out. Review how the library uses ABC order and Dewey to organize books. Have a few books on hand to demonstrate how each book has a different call number. Using Shelver, quickly model how books are shelved in alphabetical order. Use the slideshow to review Call Numbers and to introduce students to find books on Destiny and shelves.
Lesson 2: Introduction to Destiny & Review of Call Numbers
On the Promethean Panel, model how to find the Destiny Catalog through ClassLink. Model keyword search, author search, and topic buttons. Explain to students that when looking for a book, you need to write down the title of the book, location and call number. Have each student log into Destiny and find a book that they would like to check out. Use the search as an exit ticket. At check out, collect the exit ticket. If available, reward with a sticker or stamp.
Lesson 3: Fiction vs Nonfiction

Watch the video Fiction vs Nonfiction. As a class, discuss the characteristics of fiction and the characteristics of nonfiction that they learned from the video. Next, compare and contrast two books, a fiction book and a nonfiction book with the same topic. Read the first two chapters of Shark Night by R.L. Stine and Shark Frenzy: Hammerhead Sharks specifically the section called "Head Hunters." As you read, point out that in a fiction book, you read for entertainment. Meanwhile, you don't have the read the entirety of a nonfiction book. You may also point out the text features of the nonfiction book. If time permits, students may complete the Fiction/Nonfiction worksheet.
Lesson 4: Recount Fiction
Read Pig the Monster by Aaron Blabey. After reading the book, review story elements. Distribute story elements worksheet. You may have the students complete this worksheet as a group or have them work on it individually.
Lesson 5: Bridge Challenge

Give the following directions one step at a time. DO NOT give all the direction at once, design and redesign need to happen with this lesson.
Using Rok Blocks or legos have the students build a bridge 12 “ long, 5 min.
The bridge must now be 4 “ High give another 5 to 7 min.
The bridge now needs to be 4 “ wide. 10 min.
The bridge must now be able to hold two full water bottles. 10 to 15 min of build and redesign.
Groups of 2 to 4 students depending on the resources that you have.
Optional Lesson: Playaway, Wonderbooks and Destiny Search Station

Introduce Playaways and Wonderbooks using a slideshow similar to this example.. Discuss procedures and care. Also, explain and distribute permission slips. The last two slides are about the Destiny Search station. You can also introduce the station at this time.
