Lesson 1: Makerspace Challenge
Read students If I Built a House by Chris Van Dusen. Explain to students that you are going to challenge them to build a house of their own using our Makerspace items. Students can use legos, blocks, magnatiles, cardboard, knex, or whatever building materials you have. Have students sketch out their design before building. Then have them create and build!
Lesson 2: Intro to iPads
This lesson will prep students for our Hour of Code activities in December. Go through slide show with students on how we use iPads in our library. Demonstrate how to open and navigate Pebble Go on an iPad. Give students time to explore Pebble Go Animals on their own. Review how and where iPads should be stored when finished so that they are ready for the next class.
Tech Tip: Show students how to close out the tabs/apps when they are finished on the iPad.
Lesson 3: Review Pebble Go and Text Features to Locate Facts
Show students how to get into Pebble Go on an iPad. Show them how to get into the animals section. Once in the animals section search for Wild Turkeys using the keyword search bar on top. Point out that Pebble Go will bring up the animal in a list once you start typing the search term. Read/play article for students. Then hand out the research sheet and replay/read with students.
Extension:
Have students search and select an animal of their choice.
Lesson 4: Seasonal Story and Book Series
Read the story Turkey Trouble by Wendi Silvano. Discuss the story elements with students. Also, let students know that this story is part of a book series. Explain to students what a book series is.
Print and cut out a turkey for each student. Glue the turkey on to the side of an upside down Dixie cup. Students will use building toys (Legos, Keva Planks, blocks, Magna Tiles, etc.) to build a house/structure around the turkey to hide him or keep him safe from the farmer.
Extension: Pizza Osmo activity. Teacher models, students rotate through the following lesson.
