Lesson 1: Intro to Scratch Jr.
Watch this video to learn how to use Scratch Jr. It's super easy! If you need step by step instructions, here are some simple activities for the students to complete. Walk students through choosing a background, a scribe, adding actions. Allow students to explore for the rest of the class. If time allows, use the document camera to allow students share their project.
Hint: Have students add their name to the title and tell kids not the erase someone else's project.
Lesson 2: How To Catch a Leprechaun
Read How to Catch a Leprechaun by Adam Wallace. If you don't have the book, use the video.
Explain to the students that they will creating a Scratch Jr. project where they will actually catch the leprechaun! Using the skills they have learned on Day 1, have students create a Leprechaun chase using Scratch Jr. The final step in his chase is the leprechaun gifting their pot of gold. When you click on the pot of gold, your wish appears, revealing their wish. If time permits, students may share their projects.
Lesson 3: March Mammal Madness
Students will be finding information on one of four animals, and deciding as a class who would survive using a bracket similar to the one used for March Madness in basketball. Divide the class up into four groups, and assign each group one of the four animals on the bracket. Have each group look up their animal and fill out the worksheet. After everyone has found the information, have each group present their information to the class. After the anteater and the raccoon groups have shared their information, have the class decide, based on the information presented, who would win if these two animals had a confrontation. After the class has decided, write the name of the animal on the appropriate space. Next, have the honey badger and tasmanian devil groups present their information. After the class has decided, write the name of the animal on the appropriate space.
After discussing the two winning animals, have class decide who they think would be the ultimate winner and why.
