Lesson 1: Review Library Expectations and STEM
Review the library expectations for your library, using the slideshow used at the beginning of the school year.
Explain the paper chain challenge. Group students of into teams of two. Each group gets a scissors, a piece of paper and 12 inches of tape. Explain to them their challenge, to see how long of a paper chain they can make using only the supplies they were given. Before starting, five students three minutes to talk with their partner to come up with a plan. After a few minutes, they can being work. Give students 10 minutes to work on their paper chains. After 10 minutes, gather students in a large area of the library to compare the chains, to at a time. After the longest chain is established, ask the winning pair how they cut their paper so make the longest chain. Then ask if anyone had decided on a strategy and then changed their mind and why. Morale of the story, sometimes when you need to change your strategy to meet your goal.
Lesson 2: Videos as a Resource and Using a Secondary Resource
Explain that videos can also be used as a resource when doing research. Distribute the Basking Shark worksheet, read through the question and them play video. Have students practice using a video as a resource for research. After the video, have students share what they wrote.
Lesson 3: Videos as a Resource and Using World Book Kids
Students will watch the video, filling in as much of the graphic organizer as possible. After the video, tell the students that it is ok if they didn't complete the worksheet. They will be using World Book Kids to finish gathering their information. Demonstrate to students how to get to World Book Kids via Classlink. After they find the page, have students will in the rest of the worksheet.
Lesson 4: Paper Airplanes
To begin class, distribute a piece of paper to each student and instruct the class to make a paper airplane. In small groups, have the students test their airplane to see which flies the farthest. (It probably won't go well.) Play the video. When the tutorial on making the perfect airplane is given (at about 3:15), stop the video and redistribute a new piece of paper. Have students follow the directions on the video. Ask students to discuss what they had to change about their designs to create a better design. After the paper airplanes are made, ask the students test out their paper airplanes again.
