Lesson 1: Legend of the Lost Emerald
Working individually or in pairs students will need to solve the mystery of the Lost Emerald, a role playing game from the PBS website. Link the game in google classroom for easy access, briefly modeling how students will maneuver through to use clues and artifacts found to determine where the different shipwrecks can be found in the Great Lakes.
Lesson 2: Limitless Luck
Briefly discuss what luck is and have students give examples of what people think can be lucky. Today, students will be challenged to create a Shamrock frisbee that always (or at least more than 50% of the time) lands 'heads up'. Using a small paper plate or piece of paper, students will create a shamrock shape (must have four distinct sides), with one side being decorated to be the 'face' of their shamrock. They will then need to figure out how to use additional supplies given (10 toothpicks or 3 popsicle sticks plus 6 inches of tape) to create their own luck to make their shamrock land face up when flipped. Once students have created their shamrock they can test out how lucky it is by flipping their shamrock and recording how many times it lands face up and how many times it lands face down. See video to the right for more background. (Meant for teacher use)
Lesson 3: Travel the Country (or world) using online resources
Students will use one of our online resources to 'travel' to a different state (or country). For the first lesson have student plan where they would like to visit by using the country videos found in World Almanac Kids. Model for students how to navigate to those sources. By the end of this lesson students should have their country chosen and list one or two landmarks/cities to visit. They will used the linked Canva slides (make a copy and modify as you would like then share in google classroom) to create a 'guidebook' for their country along with creating a postcard they would send back home.
Additional Project idea: Students create a country or state 'commercial' in Canva that includes the information they learned about where they visited.
Lesson 4: Keep on Traveling!
Students will continue to travel and complete their project. For this second lesson they can get more information on their country using Culture Grams, Kids Edition. As students finish they can share their travels with others or work together to visit new places.
