LEAVE WITHOUT PAY (LWOP) is a temporary absence from duty without pay. LWOP must be approved by a school administrator prior to the start of the leave. Supervisors have the authority to approve 3 days or less of LWOP, upon the employee’s request. The decision to approve or disapprove LWOP requires consideration of the impact of the educator’s absence on the educational program and the ability to meet staff requirements during the period of the proposed absence. The practice of approving 3 days of APL with 2 days LWOP to provide educators a “mini vacation” is improper. LWOP will be approved or disapproved by the principal.
GS Employees may be granted up to 30 days LWOP at the discretion of a school administrator pursuant to all other information above.
