Nutrition is nourishment or energy that is obtained from food consumed or the process  of consuming the proper amount of nourishment and energy. 

Nutrition is important in  everyday life but especially in the healthcare environment. 


There are five main food types

Starches/ whole grains 



These are a good source of energy

Meats, poultry, fish, nuts, and seeds



These are a good source of protein 


Fruits and vegetables



These provide vitamins, iron, calcium and fibre


Dairy



These are good sources of protein, vitamins, and minerals

Fats



These are needed for warmth and energy
