Late adulthood

As we get older, we are less likely to be physically active, therefore our energy expenditure and requirements also reduce.

The requirement for vitamins remain the same, however it is more likely that an elderly person will be deficient in certain vitamins, which can be for a variety of reasons. For example, an elderly person may not be able to go out often, therefore may lack vitamin D.

An elderly person will benefit if their diet contains the recommended amounts of zinc and calcium.

Zinc supports a healthy immune system, which is particularly useful for elderly people who may be more vulnerable to health conditions and pressure sores.

Calcium is required in late adulthood, for good bone health.
