As you may have seen in your course handbook, most of your grades have a reference criteria which you need to achieve in order to achieve the grade overall. However, to be able to reference appropriately, you need to make use of credible sources and avoid plagiarism.

What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the act of 'copying' another person's idea, text or creative work and presenting it as your own work, especially without permission or accurate referencing.

We understand that you are new to referencing and rephrasing so we will guide and support you as much as possible.

However, if you submit plagiarised or poorly referenced work, you work will either be referred, which means you will have to repeat it again, or you may be capped at a lower grade. If you continue plagiarising your work, you may be given a disciplinary, which can affect your progression on to Level 3 Health and Social Care.

How can YOU avoid plagiarism?

  • DO NOT send other people your work or do it for them - we can see who has written what on their assignments (we are clever like that!).

  • Use a range of credible sources, such as books and websites, to gain knowledge. Write that information that you have just understood in your own words.

  • IF you do use any information word for word, for example quotes or definitions, make sure you reference it ACCURATELY using the referencing guides below.

  • If you still don't understand, IT'S OK - JUST ASK :)

Is the source Credible or C.R.A.A.P?

When completing your assignments, it is really important that you use credible sources. Using credible sources ensures that your work is correct which will result in fewer referrals.

Here is a video referring to an idea called CRAAP when researching for assignments.

Create a poster to remind yourself of the CRAAP test and what to look for in sources. Then, have a look at the 4 sources I have included below, rate them for 1 to 4, 1 being the best credible source to use and 4 being the least CRAAP source to use.

Official Referencing Guide

Here is the official referencing guide posted by the awarding body. However, I have attached a more simpler version below, feel free to use whichever one you prefer :)
