A*1 - DESCRIBE THE ROLE OF REFLECTION WITHIN CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
'REFLECTION'
Being able to reflect is an IMPORTANT SKILL which practitioners need to develop further knowledge, and improve and develop working approaches.
Reflection includes a range of aspects, these include:
Being a reflective practitioner - this involves taking a 'step back' from daily activities to examine and identify areas of work practice which can be improved - for example, I realised that you all need a catch up lesson to be able to meet deadlines and not be snowed under at home.
Take responsibility of own learning or professional growth - as a practitioner you actively need to think about what learning is required to develop professionally or personally. For example, if you want to be a paramedic, you will need to complete the level three course and progress on to University to read a degree.
Review yourself constantly - to be the best practitioner, you will need to review your own knowledge, skills and practice on a regular basis to identify any gaps and how to improve.
Plan for your own development - planning allows you to further develop and improve your knowledge, skills and practice while taking steps to achieve your overall grade. For example, you all have/ should have a plan of how to achieve your goal. So, this year the plan is to pass maths and English and move on to a Level 3 course.
Develop your knowledge and skills - Allows you to identify any existing gaps in your knowledge and skills and develop these further. So some of you may have identified that you lack communication and team working skills, these are areas you may want to work on to assist you in the future.
Creates self-awareness - reflection is key to understanding yourself. See it is a mirror image, what are you good at? What skills, behaviours and attributes do you currently have and want to improve. So, I know I speak fast and need to work on this especially when trying to explain something to you all.
Allows you to achieve positive outcomes - allows you to achieve positive outcomes for your own learning and development which can lead to a delivery of care and support you provide the individuals. So, me speaking slower will help you get most of the information I am trying to give you which means I will get better assignments from you all :)
Explain two ways in which reflection can be used to improve your working practice as a health and social care practitioner and how it can impact the care and support your provide.
Experiential Cycle by David Kolb
Although the experiential learning cycle or model provides a holistic model for learning, it can also be linked to CPD. You are now required to research this model and use examples of how it links with CPD.
