D1 - OUTLINE THE LIFE STAGES OF HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.
In HGD, you will look at the different life stages and what influences the development at each stage, such as significant life events. Health and wellbeing is a combination of physical health and social, emotional and intellectual (mental) wellbeing, not just the absence of disease or illness. Health professionals must understand the needs of the whole person to be able to support them.
HSC practitioners use a tool called PIES (physical, intellectual, emotional and social) to help categorise and make it easier to understand just what development happens through the life stages.
REMEMBER!
Growth and development do not always go hand in hand or smoothly. For example, a child may be born with a genetic condition which lets them grow to their correct life stage but never develop/ some may develop with the same skills and abilities to other people in the same life stage but never grow. For example:
Mia Kertesz (13 year old) - has dwarfism so will not grow however, is developing just like any other 13 year old and is a world champion athlete
Someone born with microcephaly (a genetic condition impacting brain and head growth) may grow in height, depending on severity but, not develop due to smaller brain size and functioning
