The Ascendant Singularity was formed by the mages Aronnax, Marenetti and Pergama to explore the secrets within the city of Chicago. The rising stars of the Consilium, they attracted a pair of ambitious younger mages, Challenger and Stone.
As the Mage War began however, the cabal's activities entered a new phase. They had uncovered the secret about a banished Supernal entity beneath the city and how it was contained. They had a plan to unleash the entity using a central key, a bronze artifact. This would open a gateway would allow Supernal energies to flow into the Fallen World and possibly allow someone to cross over with it.
A schism erupted. Some supported the plan while others argued the dangers were too great. In the end they voted and went ahead with it. While in the Astral retrieving the memory of the Artifact though, Challenger, who had stayed behind, betrayed them. They were killed while meditating, their souls trapped in the Astral forever. They retreated to the Spire and built a technological tower to dwell in. But Stone grew bitter over his death. His rage eventually overcame him and he devoured the souls of the others, stealing their powers and will.
Now he exists as a prisoner of his own mind. He punishes himself for his crimes against his friends, even as he preys on other travelers who come through. The realm decays as his influences and grief permeates it. His cabalmates are now just memories, existing to serve him. Pergama is his memory, reciting his crimes to him every night. Aronnax is his better side, always failing to stop him, failing to convince him of his folly. Marenetti is almost nothing, the man who agreed with his plans who sided with him against the others. Challenger is absent. The friend who betrayed him or who saved the city from him.
