the love of money and the church

I don’t think, us Greco-Roman Christians, can begin to comprehend how little God thinks of money. He did not create it nor did He give it to us. God made sex, power and food. See Gen 1:27. Man created money and Jesus spoke with disdain of it throughout his ministry.

Matthew 22:20-22And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left Him and went their way

Even the tithe of the Old Testament was never on cash, it was on animals, agricultural products and on physical things that God had made.

Many Christians today have regrettably, just like large portions of the church in the middle ages, been twisted completely out of the New Testament pattern by the love of money. They believe that the gospel cannot be preached without huge budgets. What rubbish! The church consist of people and the gospel is preached by people and if we are content with food and clothing, as the New Testament consistently teaches our evangelism budget would work just like that Jesus said.

Luke 10:3-4 Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road….

1 Timothy 6:8-10 (NKJV)

8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.

Are we really following the New Testament pattern?

Footnote: the cattle on a thousand hills do belong to God, as does the land. I am, by no means advocating poverty, but certainly decisive refining of our wineskins.

We have elaborate teaching on tithing (Levitical doctrine at best) and passionate doctrines of how money should flow into the hands of the Apostles when in fact the NT makes nothing of it and clearly advocates a hand to mouth type budgeting and faith.

What does the New Testament really say about it.

Matthew 6:25-31 (NKJV)

25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, “Who then can be saved?” 27 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.”

James 5:1-6 (NKJV)

1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days. 4 Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. 5 You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.
