Meiosis is a core trait of eukaryotes. Nevertheless, we also observe a wide range of genetic systems that have evolved to alter this process of meiosis and violate Mendelian expectations. The evolution of such systems is still poorly understood. This talk will focus on a particularly striking example of such non-Mendelian genetics that is found in black-winged fungus gnats (Sciaridae). In these flies, males transmit only their mother's genome to their offspring. Furthermore, during spermatogenesis, X-chromosome non-disjunction causes all sperm to contain two copies of the male’s X-chromosome. Finally, daughters and sons are produced by eliminating either one or two X-chromosomes during development. While the model itself focuses on a very specific system of fungus gnats that combines paternal genome elimination with X-chromosome elimination, the work also highlights how intragenomic conflict, and sexual conflicts over sex-ratio can feed back on core cell-biological processes.
