Caroline, Max, Norman, and Miss Marion
Original Date of Post: 02/03/2008
Narrator: And now the time has come for all of the aspiring thespians to go on stage to pull off a school production of Guys & Dolls. All though, what the audience sees on stage is a hell of a lot different from what goes on backstage. That’s where all of the action is and I know from experience! The school production of Guys & Dolls was just days away and everything was getting squared away for opening night. Miss Vivian was making sure everything was in its right place, Solidad was trying to keep the peace backstage and elsewhere, and May was preparing for her big role as one of the leading ladies. May was able to get just about everything down except for one little thing and that would be a couple of kissing scenes with Drew. It may seem a little weird about kissing a cute boy on stage, but somehow it’s been tearing May up inside. On top of that, opening night was the night she would tell Drew her true feelings about him.
Marisa: You only have a couple of days left May.
May: As I am well-aware.
Marisa: Are you well-aware that people in the play are starting to make bets about you and what your decision is going to be?
May: I really don’t care what anybody else thinks! I could care less!
Caroline: May! It’s time for dinner!
May: Okay! I’ve got to get off the phone for dinner, but I’ll talk to you tomorrow morning. (She hangs up and runs down stairs)
Caroline: Who were you talking to dear?
May: Marisa, a friend from the play!
Caroline: Speaking of your play, your father has taken time from his latest movie schedule to come see you.
May: Really?
Caroline: Of course! He wouldn’t miss you in this.
May: This is so cool!
Max: Let’s hope nothing bad happens like when you were a fairy in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and your tights split in half right on stage.
May: MAX! For God’s sake, it was ancient history! Years ago! And I would appreciate it if you don’t to tell anybody that story. I’ve only been at this school for a couple of months and I’m still trying to get on some people’s good side.
Caroline: Well, I’ll get a chance to meet all your friends now.
May: Yeah, they’re all great. There’s Marcus, Joshua, Marisa, Grace, Kelly, Tucker…
Max: What about that Drew guy? (May gasps) I’ve seen his name pop up in your diary for the last two months now.
Caroline: Max, what have I told you about snooping through your sister’s diary?
Max: Sorry Mom!
Caroline: I’ve never heard you mention this boy before hon. Who is Drew? (May blushes)
May: Just the guy I have to act alongside, that’s all!
Max: That’s not what you said in your diary! (May screams) She just drones on and on for pages about him…
May: THAT’S IT! I WANT A LOCK FOR MY ROOM! (Max runs from the dinner table) He’s just a boy I go to school with. He’s just an arrogant little snot!
Caroline: I see what this is. Sometimes the greatest couples start off with hating one another and next thing you know, they’re making out on the cover of a tabloid.
May: Mom, I think you just mentioned part of your own love life.
Caroline: Sorry dear! That is how your father and I began. Something is telling me that you and this Drew boy will end up the same way. So, is he cute? (May turns red)
May: What kind of a question is that for a mother to ask her daughter?
Caroline: You have a curious mother, so fess up!
May: I’m not saying anything. (Gets up) I’ve got to go and finish my homework and then work on my lines and not speak to anyone for about two days. (Goes into her room) Has the whole world gone mad?! (The next morning at lunch)
May: And then my stupid little brother has to go into my diary and tell my mother all about Drew. I didn’t want my mom to know and now she’s going to tell Dad.
Marisa: That does sound rough. Little siblings can be painful from what I’ve been told. I’m lucky I’m an only child.
Marcus: (Singing) For the people all said sit down…
Marisa: But sometimes I feel like I have a brother.
Kelly: Wait a minute! Your father! Is Norman really coming to see the play?
May: Uh, yeah!
Grace: Right, I’m going to need a bib since she’s going to be a drooling idiot!
Kelly: Hey, you make it sound like I’m some crazed fan. (Erika walks up)
Erika: Grace, Kelly, let’s go! We’ve got to practice on our dance routine! (Grace and Kelly sigh) Hmph!
Marisa: She still thinks you’re out to get Joshua. (She stares at May) Tomorrow’s opening night.
May: DO I NEED A DAILY REMINDER?!
Marisa: Just thought you could use one. (May sighs) Oh come on! Don’t take it so hard. (Later at rehearsals)
Solidad: It’s not asking much! And I hate to beg! But I am begging you now! Please don’t do this to me now! I don’t want you to be a Hot-Box dancer Harley!
Harley: Why not? One of the dancers is sick and you guys need another dancer.
Solidad: Harley, you have a role and that’s to be a mission worker.
Harley: It’s not a big deal! Both of the characters aren’t in the same scene as each other so I can switch out of costume in just enough time.
Solidad: You do have a point…
Harley: (Singing) I love you, a bushel and a peck! A bushel and a peck and a hug…
Miss Vivian: That won’t be necessary Harley. I’ve come up with a way for the scenes to work without one of our Hot-Box dancers.
Solidad: Oh thank God! I mean, better luck next time Harley. (Jessie walks up)
Jessie: Miss Vivian, I could always be your back-up dancer.
Harley: Save your breath! (Jessie sighs) Of all of the rotten luck! (May walks up) Well, speaking of rotten luck.
Solidad: Okay May, get into the girls dressing room and get into your mission band costume. (In the costume room)
Kelly: I feel all exposed!
Grace: Oh come on, the Hot-Box dancers have to be sexy.
Kelly: It’s just a damn shame that one of the girls had to get sick now.
Grace: I know. Let’s just thank our lucky stars that she didn’t have a big part. Plus, Miss Vivian said that she might be back for the second and final night of the performance if we’re lucky.
Kelly: Man, the stomach flu is no joke!
Grace: At least we all don’t have it. (Erika walks in) What’s up Shirley Temple? (Laughing)
Erika: Bite me! I can’t help it if Miss Vivian put that whore Jessie in charge of hair, make-up and costuming. I can’t stand her!
Kelly: You can’t stand anybody at this school.
Erika: I’m not going to let that bother me now. By the time this play ends, Joshua and I will be the talk of the school.
Kelly: All I’m looking forward to is seeing May’s father Norman! I can’t believe I’ll finally meet one of my favorite actors of all time.
May: Well, he should be coming in for opening night, so you’ll get to meet him. He’s always happy to meet any fan.
Kelly: Yay!
Erika: Once again, my theory still stays in tact that you bribed Miss Vivian to get the part of Sarah Brown.
Marisa: And you are an idiot! You saw her at auditions and you’ve seen her during the rehearsals. With the way she sings and the way she acts, she’s bound to be a big Broadway star or a movie star like her father. You are just jealous because there’s actually someone who is a triple threat like you. (Erika growls) AND, seeing as Solidad is graduating this year, you’re also scared that May might ruin your chances with other events in the future.
Kelly: You make a fine point Marisa!
Grace: Like hitting the nail on the head.
Erika: Ha! Like that can really scare me nark!
Marisa: Like the nark comment can really hurt me!
Kelly: (Screams) Hurry! We have to hurry and get dressed now!
Marisa: Holy crap! You’re right!
May: What are you talking about? We don’t have to be out in the house for a little bit.
Erika: Listen newbie, we’re talking about something worse than Miss Vivian!
Marisa: The boys will try to come in here and take a peak at us. They come in with cameras and everything. Its times like this that I wish we had a lock for this door.
May: THAT’S GROSS!
Grace: Well, not all of the boys do it. The only ones who don’t partake in this are Drew, Harley, and Tucker. Harley and Tucker for obvious reasons and Drew said he didn’t want any part of this immature crap.
May: So I guess he’s not all bad.
Erika: Oh, that’s right! You decide tomorrow on whether or not you like Drew. (May blushes) I thought so!
Kelly: Wait a second! Are you going to tell him during our matinee performance or the night performance?
May: Like I said before, opening night!
Kelly: (Whispering) What do you think she's going to decide?
Grace: I think she does like Drew and that’s why she’s going to tell him during the night performance. I guess it makes the mood more romantic!
Erika: She probably picked opening night to break his heart.
May: Guys, let’s just drop it. I don’t want to… (The door opens) WHAT THE HELL?!
Marcus: Time to come out ladies!
James: Ready or not!
Joshua: Here’s the camera! Smile and say cheese! (May runs out of the room)
Marisa: Girls, grab your scripts and FIRE! (Outside the room)
May: They’re crazy!
Drew: Maybe so, but it’s tradition for them!
May: Oh, hi Drew!
Drew: Tradition, without our traditions…
Both: …Our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof! (They both laugh)
May: Oh, very nice! You can’t say no to the classic lines like that. (Drew blushes and walks away)
Drew: See you on stage!
May: Oh God! (Marisa walks up)
Marisa: There you are! You missed it May! Erika gave Marcus the biggest wedgie I’ve ever seen and then Kelly kicked Joshua in the nuts! Is something wrong?
May: Ever since that incident a couple of weeks ago, Drew has been very distant and doesn’t want to talk to me away from the stage.
Marisa: He’s scared. He’s afraid that he might say the wrong thing before you announce your decision opening night. (May sighs) I know you won’t talk about your decision, but at least give the boy a nice kiss during those scenes. Put your tongue into it! (May gasps) Ha, just kidding! (Back in the dressing room)
Solidad: What the hell are you men doing in this room?
Joshua: Nothing at all!
Marcus: We were just…checking on the ladies.
Solidad: Stop standing around AND GET READY NOW!
All: YES MA’AM!!! (During rehearsals)
May: (Thinking) Tomorrow is the big day! What do I do?
Marisa: (Whispering) Our scene is almost here. How are you holding up?
May: Just thinking. (Music starts) Look at him. Every time I see him singing this song, I swear he’s singing it to me.
Marisa: (Thinking) There is no doubt, she does like Drew. (On stage)
Drew: (Singing) Luck be a lady tonight! Luck be a lady tonight! Luck if you’ve ever been a lady to begin with, luck be a lady tonight! (He stares at May)
May: Huh? (May blushes) He’s doing it again!
Marisa: Hmm, this is new for Drew. Usually, all he does to win all of the girls over is to give them all a rose.
May: A rose?
Marisa: Yeah. Sakura told me that on their date two years ago, he gave her a rose. Of course, he did the same thing for all of the other girls he’s dated.
May: Yeah, well I didn’t see any damn rose!
Marisa: He usually gives them out during dates. (After rehearsals outside of school)
Grace: God, I am so excited about opening night.
May: I can see why.
Grace: It’s not that May. I’m just excited about opening night in general. It’ll be a nice change of pace away from the bratty middle schoolers at the matinee.
May: I’ve never performed in front of a group of little kids before.
Grace: It is a nightmare. Those little kids are so bratty! (May looks away) It sickens me that some of them are coming to our school next year. Hey, what are you looking at?
May: Its…Drew.
Grace: Huh? (He walks away)
May: Oh.
Grace: (Thinking) She does care for him. (A little later outside of May’s house) See you tomorrow. (She walks away)
May: Right! (She goes inside)
Caroline: Welcome home May.
Norman: Hello honey!
May: Dad! (She runs over and gives him a hug) I missed you so much. How’s the new movie going?
Norman: Oh let’s not talk about work right now. Tell me May, how are things going with your rendition of Guys & Dolls? You know I can’t wait to see you up on stage with the lead role.
Max: And I can’t wait to see if you mess up so I can capture it on tape.
May: MAX!!! You guys aren’t really going to bring any cameras to this thing are you?
Caroline: Of course we are dear!
May: That’s just…Great!
Norman: So May, I heard from your mother that you have a little boyfriend.
May: What?
Caroline: Oh don’t be so shy dear! Your father wants to know about Drew.
Max: Yeah, the boy you mention so much in your diary!
May: I TOLD YOU TO STAY OUT OF MY DIARY! You guys are making too much out of all of this. Drew is just the boy who’s playing Sky Masterson. We’re together on stage, but that’s about it.
Norman: Now some of the best stage hook-ups are the best hook-ups.
Max: Yeah, but most of them go horribly wrong and we learn one of them is cheating on another. (Norman nervously laughs) Hey, is that what happened with you and Mom?
Caroline: Actually Max, I was at one of your father’s movies years ago. Now, this was before your father was the big star you know him to be. I was at the premier party with one of my friends and somehow, your father was infatuated from the moment I came into the door.
May: How romantic! And you fell in love with him on the spot right?
Caroline: Good God no! Your father was an arrogant piece of crap when I first met him.
Max: Hey, that’s the same thing that you said about Drew. (May groans) What was wrong with Dad anyways?
Caroline: Oh! I don’t think it’s something I should be telling a boy your age.
Max: Why, was he drunk?
Norman: MAX!
Caroline: Yeah and he stalked me throughout the night. But after sobering up, he gave me a call because someone gave him my phone number. We started to see each other and soon enough, we were married, and had you two. And it has been bliss ever since! So you see, even the most unlikely couples can work it out. Your father and I have been married for over 17 years. (May sighs and gets up) Are you going to bed already?
May: Yeah. I’ve got a long day ahead of me.
Narrator: It was finally the day of the performance. Now all of the people in the play got out of their classes for the day since at that time, they were doing a matinee performance for little middle school students. Now, Guys & Dolls isn’t really the kind of play you want to perform to middle school kids, so I don’t know what was going through Miss Vivian’s mind at the time. Now with the matinee performance, May did all of the kissing scenes without hesitation. But she never revealed if she liked Drew back yet! Meanwhile, Drew got a lot of hype from all of the young girls in the audience. After the matinee, May and a couple of the other girls left campus to get something to eat and have some girl talk.
May: If this is your idea of trying to get the answer out me, you all are mistaken. I’m not revealing anything until tonight and I want it…
Erika: Oh stuff a sock in it you egomaniac!
Kelly: Yeah, we’re just here to get something to eat before we go back on stage again.
Marisa: At least we survived the middle school crowd!
Erika: Yeah, those little brats can be so immature.
Marisa: Did you hear those girls cheering hard for Drew? It was like they were at a Justin Timberlake concert!
Erika: Great, he’s attracting all of these younger girls now. I sure hope Drew knows about Statutory Rape!
Grace: But remember, the big performance is tonight. This is when all of our friends and family members will come.
Marisa: I know. Tracey…and…Ash, Misty, Brock and Sakura will be there! (Nervous laughter)
Erika: Hmm, oh whatever! (Marisa sighs)
Kelly: And Norman will be there! I wonder if I can get his autograph. (Marcus walks up)
Marcus: There you all are! Mind if I join you guys?
Grace: Be my guest!
May: Did you come alone?
Marcus: Yeah, most everybody is back at the theatre doing some last minute adjustments for tonight’s performance. Joshua and Drew were helping Jessie with something involving costuming. (Erika gets up)
Grace: Oh sit down! Joshua isn’t that stupid to cheat on you with someone like Jessie and there’s no way Drew would be that stupid either.
May: Okay, for the rest of lunch, could you all not mention Drew again?
Erika: Whatever you say! And I thought I was obsessed!
May: So Marcus, is your family coming to see the performance?
Marcus: Oh God, family from all over is coming to see this. There’s going to be people there that I don’t even know but somehow, they know me! Of course, I can’t be as blessed as some people who only have two people.
Marisa: Have you forgotten how my family is? My parents fight non-stop and my dad is the most embarrassing man ever. I thank God it’s only two people! It’ll be worse if anyone else from the family came. But speaking of family problems, I heard Miss Vivian’s sisters are coming to the performances.
May: What’s the big deal?
Grace: Well you haven’t been at this school for that long so you haven’t met most of the other teachers. Miss Lillian is the cheerleading coach and Miss Marion is the chorus teacher. Now the school really doesn’t give the drama department as much money as they do with choir and cheerleading, and she really doesn’t get along with her sisters because of that.
May: Harsh.
Narrator: A couple of hours passed and all of the actors were backstage getting ready for their opening night performance of Guys & Dolls. The audience was filled with friends, family members, and even faculty members. Away from the stage, Solidad was up in the tech booth getting everything ready for the opening scene. Meanwhile, Miss Vivian was welcoming everybody into the theatre, including her sisters Miss Marion and Miss Lillian.
Vivian: Lillian, Marion, how very nice of you two to drop by!
Lillian: Well, we do get in free as faculty members.
Vivian: I should get rid of that privilege!
Marion: Well, let’s see how your students do in Guys & Dolls. I’m interested into knowing if they are able to pull off the singing. I know Drew is a very good singer, but I haven’t heard this new girl May.
Vivian: Then prepare to be blown away because this girl can sing!
Lillian: I’ll take your word for it sis! But for your sake, let’s just hope this isn’t a snore fest like with Les Mis last year.
Vivian: (Growls) Just take your seats! (They walk away) Everybody’s a critic! (In the green room)
May: I have to admit, I’m getting kind of nervous!
Grace: Pre-show jitters? Don’t worry, everybody gets them. Kelly’s in the bathroom as we speak throwing up. (May gasps) Oh don’t worry, she’ll be okay. After she does that, she feels ready to go on stage ready to go. (A toilet flushes)
Kelly: I’m ready!
Erika: Why the hell are you so nervous Kelly? I mean, it’s not like you have a major role in this play. Plus, you sing all the time in front of many people when you’re singing with me and Grace.
May: Come on Erika, everyone gets nervous at one point or another. At my old school, I would always get nervous before any kind of performance. Whether the role was big or small, it didn’t matter. But once I got on stage, all of the fears just go away.
Kelly: That was beautiful! Spoken like the true daughter of Norman! (May chuckles) I can’t wait to meet him. (Marisa enters the room)
Marisa: I just got word from Solidad, we’ve got five minutes before we start. (She leaves the room and walks into another room)
Joshua: Five bucks says that she breaks his heart by saying no.
Harley: Ooh, that’s so rotten! Put me down for those odds!
James: I think she may go with him.
Marcus: Yeah, it could happen. I’ll put five dollars saying that she says yes. You never know, Drew can sure charm even the meanest girls.
Marisa: (Clears her throat) Five minutes!
Joshua: Oh crap!
Marcus: Hide the money!
Marisa: Oh save it! (She leaves the room) Idiots! (Bumps into Drew) Oh hey! We’ve got five minutes Drew!
Drew: Thanks Marisa. Break a leg!
Marisa: You too! (He walks away) Hmm. (Out in the audience)
Brock: So when do you think the show should start?
Misty: It should be any minute now.
Tracey: After all of these months of rehearsals, I’m sure they’re all ready to get on stage.
Sakura: True enough.
Brock: I just hope it isn’t too boring!
Ash: Marcus told me that it wasn’t going to be boring at all. He told me that there would be a bunch of women doing a dance number in skimpy outfits.
Brock: WOW!
Misty: Ash, you weren’t suppose to tell him that! (The lights dim)
Tracey: (Whispering) It’s starting! (Miss Vivian walks on stage)
Miss Vivian: Hello all and welcome to our production of Guys & Dolls. We ask that you please turn off all cell phones and any other electronic device that may cause noise. And we ask you to please stay quiet so that our actors can concentrate. Thank you and enjoy the show!
Narrator: Guys & Dolls! Such a wonderful play and…THREE HOURS LONG! You’ll be here all day and we can’t have that! So it’s time to sum up the most important parts for you. The first couple of scenes went along pretty smooth like. May was able to hit all of her notes when singing her mission song. When it was time for her to sing her duet with Drew, everybody was on edge wondering if this was when she was going to reveal if she likes Drew. As if her message was sealed with a kiss! NOTHING HAPPENED! It was just a kiss and a slap in the face as scripted. Next, everyone backstage wondered if it was in the next kissing scene. Well…
Drew: (Singing)
I've never been in love before
Now all at once it's you
It's you forever more
I've never been in love before
I thought my heart was safe
I thought I knew the score
But this is wine that's all too strange and strong
I'm full of foolish song
And out my song must pour
Both: (Singing)
So please forgive this helpless haze I'm in
I've really never been
In love before (They kiss)
Narrator: Again, nothing happened! May didn’t tell him anything or send any kind of message with the kiss. And now for an unrelated matter! Some jaws dropped when the audience saw the Hot-Box dancers go from wearing pretty dresses, to stripping down into skimpy clothing! (In the audience)
Brock: (Whispering) There is a God!
Misty: (Thinking) Pervert!
Narrator: Please note that there were NO wardrobe malfunctions with that routine! And then this happened a little later…
Marcus: (Singing)
Sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down, you’re fucking the goat!
Narrator: Luckily, nobody in the audience heard him sing that because his little line was backed up by everyone else on stage singing “Sit down you’re rocking the boat.” But, everybody on stage heard Marcus singing that line. Skipping right along to the curtain calls! All of the boys cheered their hardest when all of the girl dancers took their bows. Erika and Joshua may have gotten a standing ovation, but it was Drew and May that really had the crowd roaring. Everybody grabs each others hands, take their final bows, and thus ends a great opening night. I can’t believe I sat through three hours of this piece of crap and I still don’t know May’s decision! (The curtain falls)
Drew: Uh May, you can let go of my hand now.
May: I know. I just don’t want to. (Drew smiles)
Drew: Does this mean…That you feel the same way? (May kisses Drew on the lips)
Grace: (Loudly) ALRIGHT MAY! (Cheering)
Kelly: Way to go! (A little later in the audience)
Brock: Will you go out with me?
Grace: This is such an inappropriate moment. My family is right here for Christ sake!
Kelly: Out of my way, I’ve got to meet May’s father in person!
Brock: Please…ladies! (Misty grabs his ear)
Misty: Put a sock in it! Hey, there’s Marisa and Marcus!
Tracey: You guys were awesome! (He hands Marisa and Marcus a rose) You guys can have the first roses. (Marisa blushes)
Marcus: Just out of curiosity, what did you guys think of my song?
Sakura: Aside from you singing it constantly for the last two months, it was actually a lot better seeing it on stage. It was great! (All agreeing)
Marcus: So you guys didn’t hear anything obscene in the song?
All: No! (Marcus sighs)
Marisa: I still can’t believe you said that though!
Marcus: SHUT UP!
Ash: Said what?
Marcus: IT’S NOTHING!
Misty: So where’s the star of the play?
Brock: There’s May?
Sakura: OH MY GOD! Whose hand is she holding?
All: DREW?!
Ash: Since when does she like Drew? (They all sigh)
Misty: So, I see you two are now officially a couple. (Sighs) How romantic! You two are so lucky!
Marisa: (Thinking) I thought so! They do care for each other.
May: Oh, there are my parents! (She runs over to see them)
Caroline: Congratulations on a job well done!
Norman: You really do take after your old man!
Max: Not bad! But you were a little off and shaky when singing in that duet. But that is to be expected! You’ve still got a ways to go before you’re anywhere as talented as Dad.
May: Gee, thanks! (Drew walks up)
Drew: Yeah, I’ll agree with you kid, she does have a ways to go…But she did a great job and you cannot deny that.
Max: Yeah. Hey wait a sec, you’re Drew!
Caroline: So, you’re the Drew that I’ve heard so much about. I’m May’s mother Caroline.
Norman: Hmm…I’m watching you! (Beeper goes off) Oh goodness, I’m being called in for a cameo appearance on a reality show. (Kelly runs up) Huh?
Kelly: Finally…I get to meet you! Mr. Norman, I’m a huge fan! Can I have your autograph?
Norman: Anything for a fan! (Kelly screams) Well, an energetic fan! Sorry I won’t be able to see the rest of your performances May. I’ll be on the first flight out of here tomorrow morning. But it was great seeing you and this wonderful play. (Goes over to Drew) Don’t do anything while I’m gone. (He walks with Kelly) So you really like my movies?
Kelly: I LOVE THEM! Got any tips for an aspiring actress? (They walk away)
May: I’ll wait until his next visit to tell him that we’re a couple. (Miss Vivian walks up)
Miss Vivian: Oh May, Drew, you two were just the greatest. I knew I made a right decision by casting you two as the leads. I told my overbearing sister that I didn’t need her help!
May: Um, thanks Miss Vivian!
Miss Vivian: The way that you two were on stage, people actually thought that you two were actually a real couple. (May and Drew chuckle)
Drew: How did we do in the box-office?
Miss Vivian: We did better than ever! And, this is only opening night! We’ve got two more nights of this wonderful magic I call theatre. (Miss Marion walks up)
Miss Marion: There you all are! I had to come up and meet the wonderful lady who did a fantastic job as Miss Sarah Brown. I finally get a chance to meet you.
May: Well…here’s your chance! (Nervous laugh)
Miss Marion: May, I would be honored if you would sing for one of my choir concerts this year. You as well Drew! I think you two would be able to knock them dead.
Miss Vivian: Hands off you mooch! These two are my students! (May starts to giggle)
Narrator: I take it all back! This was indeed a night to remember. What does the future have in store for the newly couple of May and Drew? Stay tuned to find out!
