May & Joshua
Original Date of Post: 01/13/2008
Narrator: Two years down, two more to go.
Ash: There you guys are! How have you all been?
Misty: I’ve been good.
Marisa: Ditto! I’ve just been traveling a lot during the summer.
Ash: Traveling?
Marcus: Oh my God yes! You just can’t help but feel jealous of her whenever she goes out of town. Her family is loaded!
Marisa: We’re not rich! We save up to go places! Plus, I didn’t hear you complaining when I brought you back that sombrero. Sorry I couldn’t get you that blowup doll Brock.
Brock: That's okay. I think the real thing would do just nicely. (Sighs) Hell, I’ll just kill for a girl. Any girl! (Misty grabs his ear)
Misty: You pig! Hey you guys, I was wondering if any of you heard from Sakura over the summer.
Ash: Nope, haven’t heard from her or seen her.
Marisa: Me neither. In fact, I really didn’t speak to her since our last day of school last semester.
Misty: Now I’m scared. I wonder if she’s moved or is going to some different school. I just remember that she quit the Cheerleading team at the end of the semester. I do hope she’s okay.
Marcus: So you guys are looking for extra people on the squad.
Misty: It couldn’t hurt. There aren’t that many girls since my sisters graduated.
Marcus: Sign me up! I’ll be happy to tryout!
Misty: Really Marcus? We can always use more men on the squad. (Marcus blushes)
Ash: Well, I wasn’t expecting that to happen. (Marisa and Marcus walk to another corner)
Marisa: Impressive Marcus. I thought Brock was a big pervert, but you joining the squad is just a whole new level.
Marcus: I didn’t do it so that I could meet chicks! I just wanted to help Misty out. I do enjoy helping out my friends whenever I get a chance.
Marisa: Really? So I suppose you forgot what play we’re doing this year. Guys & Dolls!
Marcus: Huh? I thought we were doing Annie this year!
Marisa: No and thank God we’re not! I hate that musical! We are doing Guys & Dolls! The certain play where you might get the chance to play the certain character that you love so much. Now how does that sound?
Marcus: Nicely, nicely, thank you! Well I’ll think about it. Auditioning for Nicely, Nicely Johnson is a very tempting offer, but still…Hey, what the? Are you even listening to me?
Marisa: Oh sorry, I must have spaced out for a second.
Marcus: Geez! If I didn't know any better you were…Oh, I see! You were staring at Tracey again! So little buddy, are you going to spend another year hiding in the closet?
Marisa: Please don’t talk about closets unless you’re talking about Tucker or Harley.
Marcus: I seem to recall a certain someone in glasses who liked to talk about a certain boy quite a bit over the phone with me during the summer. (Marisa growls) Just face the facts that you are obsessed with him. You’ve been following him around like a stray puppy dog all last year.
Marisa: Oh shut up! Huh? (Thinking) Could it be? No, that doesn’t look like…
Marcus: What’s the matter? You look like you just saw a ghost.
Marisa: Not at all! I’m just going to get to class now! (Nearby)
Ash: So, who’s the next victim to fall into your radar?
Brock: Well no one so far. The older crowd hates me and the younger crowd doesn’t look too exciting. But then again, Marina over there is looking hotter than she did last year.
Marina: Huh? (Gasp) PERVERT! (Throws a book at Brock’s head and he falls down)
Ash: Are you alright?
Brock: Is it just me or are they making books a lot heavier? (A girl walks up)
May: Excuse me, I’m new here and I was wondering if you could help me find my class.
Ash: Sure thing. Let me see your schedule. Oh that’s easy! You just go right from here and it’s the first door on the left.
May: Thank you so much. It’s my first day at this school and it’s a lot bigger than my last school.
Ash: Not a problem. Happy to help!
May: Oh yeah, my name is May.
Ash: Nice to meet you May. I’m Ash and that’s my friend Brock lying unconscious on the ground.
May: Is he going to be okay?
Ash: Don’t worry; he’s got a thick skull. Come on, stick with us and you won’t get lost in this place! (Nearby)
Marisa: I’m sure that looked like her…But it couldn’t be! But then again, it has been a while since then. No, it’s probably a new person! (Bumps into someone) Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry! I wasn’t looking where I was going!
Tracey: It’s quite alright.
Marisa: Tracey?
Tracey: Hey, it’s great to see you again. How was your summer?
Marisa: Interesting for the most part. I was traveling around with my family. But I’m glad we’re back in school. I was actually counting down the days until we could come back to school. I missed hanging around with everyone. I mean, we’ve all been doing our own thing for the last few months.
Tracey: I see what you mean.
Marisa: How was your summer?
Tracey: Okay I guess. I didn’t do as much as I planned to. (Bell rings) Oh, time for class. I’ll catch up with you later. (He leaves)
Marisa: Damn school bell. (At lunch)
Brock: Would you go out with me?
Erika: I have a boyfriend! I’ve been telling you that every day you ask me out! Pervert!
Misty: Shot down again!
Brock: Yeah, but I still have hope.
Marcus: You haven’t gotten lucky with one single girl at this school. Well, except for that psychopath! What chances do you have with any girl?
Brock: Better chance than you! Although, nobody can beat Tracey’s record!
Tracey: Huh?
Marcus: Oh come on man! You went out with a cheerleader last year.
Tracey: Yeah, but we broke up months ago. I’m starting out fresh this year with a clean slate.
Brock: Now that’s the kind of attitude I want to hear! Don’t get tied down with the sadness from the past and just keep on trying until you reach the top…of a pretty girl’s rack! (Misty grabs his ear)
Misty: Don’t even try it! (Ash and May walk up)
Ash: There you all are! You guys don’t mind if I invite another one to sit in our little group, do you?
Brock: The more, the merrier.
Ash: Cool. I want you all to meet May. She’s actually a junior like the rest of us and is new to this school. May, this here is Misty, Marisa, Marcus, and Tracey.
May: Nice to meet you all.
Marcus: It’s nice to have another person to join our circle of friends. Everybody here is really kind and very helpful. But if you value your health, stay away from Brock.
Brock: Hey, don’t make me out to look like the bad guy!
Marisa: No! Your reputation as the class pervert is enough proof. (May giggles) I’m sorry if these idiots scared you.
May: No, not at all! You guys actually have a lot of sense of humor. That’s what I like to see and hear. No one at my last school could really take a joke.
Marcus: Sounds rough. Were you in Russia under communist control?
Marisa: Russia isn’t under communist control anymore.
Marcus: They’ll go back! Mark my words they will go back! It all says so right in my special magazine!
May: No, I wasn’t in Russia. My parents just put me in some private school for the last two years. I didn’t care much for it, but it had a wonderful theatre department.
Marisa: You’re into theatre? (May nods) That’s great! Well, I don’t know how wonderful your school was with the drama department, but we have a pretty good department. If you’re interested, we’re having auditions in a couple of weeks for Guys & Dolls.
May: Are you serious? Guys & Dolls is my all-time favorite musical!
Marisa: Great to hear it May! All you have to do for the audition is go up in front of some of the crew members and our director and sing a song of your choice.
Marcus: Let’s hope that you have the voice of an angel. I’ll be damned if any female lead role is going to Harley of all people! (Harley walks by)
Harley:
I'M SUPER Thanks for asking
All things considered, I couldn't be better I must say
I'm feeling super, No, nothing bugs me
Everything is super when you're
Don't you think I look cute in this hat?
May: Who was that?
Marisa: That would be Harley and it sounds like he was watching the South Park movie again. He is one of the school’s biggest drama queens!
Brock: Don’t you mean flaming queen?
Sakura: There’s everybody!
Misty: Sakura, long time, no…Ah! (All gasp)
Sakura: It’s so great to see everybody.
Marisa: Sakura, is that you?
Sakura: Of course it’s me! Who were you expecting Janet Jackson?
Marcus: (Thinking) The fat Janet Jackson?
Brock: Uh, great seeing you again! (Leans over to Ash and whispers) Hey, is it just me or did she gain a lot of weight over the summer?
Ash: (Whispering) I know!
May: (Whispering) Who is she?
Marisa: (Whispering) That’s our friend Sakura. But here’s what we’re really shocked by! Take a look at this picture taken just a few months ago.
May: (Whispering) No way!
Sakura: Hey, you’re new here!
Marisa: Yeah, this is May. May, this is our friend Sakura.
May: Um, hi!
Marisa: Oh…Wow, look at the time! May, uh, we were on our way to the theatre so you could, um meet everybody.
May: What? (They leave)
Brock: Uh yeah, and Ash, we’re going to the courts to play Richie and Morrison.
Ash: We are? (They leave)
Marcus: Oh crap, I left something in the photo room!
Tracey: And I’ll help you with that! (They leave)
Sakura: Huh? Everyone seems to be in a hurry today.
Misty: Um yeah, I guess you can say that. (Inside the theatre)
Marisa: Here we are. Most of the drama students hang around here for lunch. Come on, I’ll introduce you to everybody. This is Solidad, she’s the Thespian president. Solidad, this is May, she’s new to the school.
Solidad: It’s nice to meet you May. I take it you’re going to audition for our production of Guys & Dolls.
May: Absolutely, Guys & Dolls is one of my favorite plays.
Solidad: Glad to hear it May. I’ll be the stage manager for it, hope you can sing. Wait right here, I want you to meet our director.
Marisa: Miss Vivian is our director and one of the very best.
Erika: Did I hear right? We have a newbie among us. Come on Marisa, who’s your new friend?
Marisa: (Sighs) This is Erika. (Whispering) She’s really a singing, obsessed, control freak.
Erika: I heard that nark!
Grace: Come on Erika let’s not start a fight, again. We apologize for our friend. I’m Grace and this is Kelly.
Kelly: OH MY GOODNESS! I KNOW WHO YOU ARE! You’re the daughter of the great Norman. I saw you on all of the award shows with him. Do you guys know how big this is?
Grace: I know it’s big to you.
Marisa: I really don’t follow the movies he does.
Kelly: Well I do. What’s it like being related to one of the greatest actors of all time?
May: Um, I’d rather not talk about it.
Solidad: Marisa, can I see you for a second?
Marisa: Sure thing, I’ll be right back May.
Erika: Come on, we better get back to our singing girls (They leave)
May: This is so awesome! (Picks up a script off the ground) Oh, I just can’t wait for auditions. (Turns the page) Oh, it’s one of my favorite songs. (Starts singing)
For I've imagined every bit of him
To the strong moral fiber to the wisdom in his head
To the home-y aroma of his pipe
And I shall meet him when the time is right (Drew watches from backstage)
I'll know when my love comes along
I won't take a change.
I'll know he'll be just what I need
Not some fly-by-night Broadway romance.
And I'll know at a glance by the two-pair of pants.
I'll know by the calm steady voice
Those feet on the ground.
I'll know as I run to his arms
That at last I've come home safe and sound.
Until then, I shall wait.
Until then, I'll be strong.
Oh, I'll know, when my love comes along
Drew:
Mine will come as a surprise to me
Mine I lead to chance and chemistry
May: Chemistry?
Drew: Yeah, chemistry! (He continues)
Suddenly I'll know when my love comes along
I'll know then and there
I'll know at the sight of her face
How I care, how I care, how I care
And I'll stop. And I'll stare
And I'll know long before we can speak
I'll know in my heart
I'll know and I won't ever ask
Am I right, am I wise, am I smart
And I'll stop. And I'll stare
At that face, in the throng
Yes, I'll know when my love comes along
Miss Vivian: (Clapping) Bravo, bravo. That was great you two. Drew, I can’t wait to see you audition next week. I know you’ve had your eye on the part of Sky Masterson. (Drew flicks his hair) And you must be the new girl, May. It’s nice to meet you. I’m the drama teacher here, Miss Vivian. After hearing you sing with Drew, I can definitely see you as the part of Sarah Brown.
May: You really think so?
Miss Vivian: Only time will tell my dear. A lot of people are going out for the part of Sarah Brown. Auditions are next week, break a leg. (She walks away)
Drew: So you’re new to this school? Well, I’m Drew.
May: Yeah, it’s my first day here. So, your name is Drew. I’m May and it’s nice to meet you. I have to say that you have such a great voice.
Drew: Thank you. Well May, you were quite sloppy starting off and there were a couple of notes you couldn’t hit.
May: Give me a break, it was just for fun.
Drew: Maybe so, but the auditions next week are going to be far from fun. Next week, it’s put up or shut up. See you then, maybe. (He leaves)
May: What a jerk!
Marisa: So I see you’ve met Drew. I know he may seem like a total stuck-up snob, but he’s a rather nice guy once you get to know him. But you were very good. I wish I could sing like that. You’re a shoo-in for the play.
Joshua: I’ll say.
Marisa: Oh yeah, here’s another thespian. This here is Joshua. Joshua, this is May.
Joshua: Very nice to meet you. (They shake hands)
Erika: Hey newbie, hands off!
Marisa: Oh, I forgot to mention that he’s Erika’s boyfriend.
Joshua: Erika, I was only saying hi to her. You have to forgive Erika; she can get a little territorial when it comes to certain things.
Marisa: Yeah, it’s not easy being her whipping boy!
Joshua: I’m not her whipping boy!
Erika: Joshua! Stand up straight!
Joshua: Yes ma’am!
Erika: And could you be a dear and grab my backpack from the classroom?
Joshua: Sure thing. (He leaves)
Erika: What would I ever do without him? Now as for you newbie! If I ever see you frolicking around my boyfriend, don’t think I won’t lay your ass out in the parking lot. I can do it too! (She leaves)
Marisa: Don’t let her intimidate you. She’s basically all bark and no bite. (Outside at the basketball courts)
Ash: Holy crap!
Brock: I know. It’s still pretty unbelievable how Sakura was able to gain so much weight in just three months. But then again, without that much exercise or a proper diet, I guess you can say that would be the end result.
Richie: You’re right Brock. I just feel so bad for her with all of the rumors going around.
Brock: What rumors?
Richie: Well there have been all of these rumors flying around all morning. One is that she had to deal with this weight problem all her life. And then there’s another one that says she got dumped one night and never came out of her house until now.
Morrison: Well, whatever the story is, she looks pretty bad.
Ash: She has bigger breasts than you!
Brock: Hell, she’s got bigger breasts than Marisa!
Richie: You’ve got that right and Marisa’s got those big melons!
Misty: You men disgust me! (They all turn around) Pigs!
Ash: Hey, don’t call us the pigs!
Misty: You guys are no better than pigs. Sakura is one of your friends and instead of comforting her; you all run off somewhere and talk behind her back.
Brock: Well, you stayed with her. So what did she say to you? Anything leading to how she packed on all of those pounds!
Misty: Not a clue. I tried not talking to her about it or bringing it up, but I know that was stupid of me.
Brock: Misty, I’m sorry for my comments if offended.
Richie: Same here.
Ash: Yeah, I’m sorry as well. I know how sensitive you girls get when it comes to the subject of weight.
Morrison: Gee Ash; if I knew you were going to act like a girl today, I would have given you my mother’s bra to wear!
Ash: I’ll show you who’s a girl! PLAY BALL!
Misty: Dumb-asses! (In the photo room)
Marcus: There we go! I’ve waited a long time to develop these babies!
Tracey: Nice. But enough of that! Why on earth do you want to try out to be a cheerleader?
Marcus: Absolutely no reason at all. I just wanted to help Misty out. I mean, there is a shortage of cheerleaders. And now that Sakura has joined the, ugh, plus-size club, she’s out! You know, I’m just being a very supportive friend. You could always try out as well.
Tracey: Hell no. So who’s the girl?
Marcus: What girl?
Tracey: There must be some cheerleader you’re impressing, otherwise you wouldn’t be tip-toeing around with this. So who is she?
Marcus: So what if I have a crush on someone?
Tracey: I knew it! So, can you tell me who it is?
Marcus: No. I haven’t told anyone who it is. Not even Marisa! But now that I think about it...Maybe this isn't the right path for me.
Tracey: You're just now figuring that out?
Marcus: Well...I'll see you later. I gotta go talk to Misty. (Before fourth period in the hallway)
Misty: So, you’re not going to tryout?
Marcus: Not this time. I’m sorry if I disappointed you Misty.
Misty: No, it’s alright. I didn’t want to force you to do something you really felt uncomfortable doing.
Marcus: Oh no, that wasn’t the case. It’s just that it was either tryout for cheerleading or give up on auditions for Guys & Dolls. I just couldn’t say no to this play! (Laughing)
Misty: I understand. But, if you ever change your mind, you know you can always see me and I’ll help you out. (Bell rings) I’m going to class now, so I’ll see you later. (She walks away)
Marcus: (Thinking) There may be a chance for this old boy! (After school outside the girl’s bathroom)
Misty: Huh? Brock, what are you doing outside the girl’s bathroom?
Brock: No reason!
Misty: If you’re following girls into the bathroom again, so help me God I will beat the crap out of you.
Brock: Right, now that’s my cue to get the hell out of here! (Brock leaves)
Misty: I can’t believe this guy sometimes. (Opens the door) Well, doesn’t look like anyone is being held hostage in here. (Hears sobbing) Huh? (Knocks on the door) Are you okay in there?
Sakura: Misty?
Misty: Sakura? Is that you? (Locks the front bathroom door) It’s okay, it’s just me! Do you want to tell me why you’re crying?
Sakura: Go away Misty!
Misty: Come on sweetie! You can trust me with anything. Just tell me what’s bothering you. (Sakura opens the door and walks out)
Sakura: Do you think I’m ugly?
Misty: What? No! Why would you get such a stupid idea in your head?
Sakura: Come on Misty, you can stop with the lies. With just one look at me, you can just tell that I’m fat.
Misty: Mind telling me what happened during the summer?
Sakura: (Sighs) I really can’t tell you. Not that I don’t want to, it’s just that I really can’t remember much of the summer. I guess I lost sight of what I was doing and stopped paying attention to taking care of myself. (Knocking at the door)
Misty: We’ll be right out! It doesn’t have to end like this. If you’re really unhappy with yourself, you can always try dieting.
Sakura: I know.
Misty: And you know I can always help you get back into shape! (Knocking continues) I said we’ll be right out!
Sakura: Are you sure you want to help me?
Misty: Absolutely! Sakura, you are one of my best friends and I would be happy to help any of my friends if they are in dire need of help. Just as I’m sure you would do the same for me if the shoes were on the other feet. (Knocking continues) Oh for the love of Buddha! (Opens the door) DO YOU MIND?! I SAID WE’LL ONLY BE A SECOND! (Slams the door)
May: Fine! I’ll go to another bathroom.
Sakura: Alright Misty! I’ll take you up on your offer. (A few minutes later outside the theatre)
Marisa: So, you’re up for the challenge of going out for the lead? (May nods) You realize that almost every girl in theatre is going out for the role of Sarah Brown right? Are you feeling a little nervous?
May: Absolutely not! I’m not going to let anyone get in my way. Especially not that arrogant green hair!
Marisa: Green hair? Drew?
May: He thinks he’s such a triple threat! He better think again when he sees me up on stage! (Marcus walks up)
Marisa: Well look what the cat dragged in! I thought you were at the cheerleading tryouts today!
Marcus: I decided not to go through with it. I feel that I should stick with what I know and what I like doing. But right now, all I know is that I’m going to get my role of…
Marisa: Nicely, Nicely Johnson! God, I have to live with hearing that for four months! You have to audition first! (Harley walks up)
Harley: Ooh, are you guys just as excited about auditioning as I am?
Marisa: Well, some more than others. How about you?
Harley: I just can’t wait hon! I just have a feeling that I’m going to get the part I want.
Marcus: Which one is that Harley?
Harley: Sarah Brown of course! (All gasp) What’s the matter?
Marcus: You think that Miss Vivian is going to give a female leading role to you?
Harley: She’s always looking for fresh new ideas to her creativity bracket. Why not start with that?
May: Interesting? Are you up for a friendly competition?
Harley: You mean you’re going out for the role of Sarah Brown as well?
Marisa: She sure is! This here is May and she’s new to this school.
Harley: Break a leg doll face! But we shall see the results soon enough!
May: You know it!
~*Preview*~
Marcus: This is it! Auditions time! All the girls are ready and are out for blood for the main role! It's anybody's game now. Could it be Marisa? Or Jessie? Or Harley? Maybe it could be our new girl of the group May! No telling. As for the guys...well Drew's got this thing licked. We'll see what happens. Next time on Romance 101, Chapter 24...See you next time!
