Definition: to contend, compete; to fight it out; to dispute; (with inf) to try hard
Sententia: Lanista gladiatores in ludo exercet ut audaciter in amphitheatro certent.
The gladiator-trainer exercises the gladiators in the school so that they may boldly fight in the amphitheater.
The word "certamen" comes from certo, and means a competition/contest.
