Nonagesimus Quintus: August 23, 2008: Solum + Solus + Sol
Theme for this week: Easily confused words
solum, soli n.
Definition: ground, floor, bottom; soil, land, country; (foot) sole; (fig) basis; solo aequare raze to the ground
(coincidentally, that last definition reminds me of my FAVORITE word, a certain profligo)
solus, sola, solum (gen solius, dat soli)
Definition: only, alone; lonely, forsaken; (place) lonely, deserted
sol, solis m.
Definition: sun; sunlight, sun's heat; (poetry) day; (myth) Sun god
Sententiae: Solum solum in aliena terra luce duorum solum fulsit.
The deserted soil on an alien land gleamed with the light of two suns.
I liked the theme for the past week so much that I decided to continue it into the weekend =D Again, a set of 3 words, and again I am not going to determine the frequencies in the syllabi, for solus and sol are too common to viably do that. Coincidentally, that last definition of solum ("raze to the ground") reminds me of my FAVORITE word, a certain profligo.
NB: Bold and underline == macron
