Duodeoctogesimus: August 6, 2008: Illico
Theme for this week: Words from NJCL Convention
illico
Definition: immediately; on the spot, in that very place
NB: I have no clue where the macrons would be for this word because it isn't actually in my dictionary-- probably just over the 'o,' but I don't want to guess. And the College Board doesn't give you macrons!
Sententia: Postquam imperator mappam deiecit, omnes aurigarum illico equos quam celerrime incitaverunt ut iuga alia profligarent.
After the emperor threw down the mappa, all of the charioteers immediately urged on the horses as quickly as possible so that they
might dash to the ground the other teams.
This next sentence will only be understood by people who went to National Convention (sorry!):
Si Grace Ardens te tangit, illico siste, cade, et volve!
If Fiery Grace (i.e. Grace on FIRE!) touches you, immediately stop, drop, and roll!
This word was in the Advanced Certamen finals (I forget the question). It is also sometimes asked as a multiple choice vocab question, listing this word with 3-4 other options like statim, confestim, etc and asking which one didn't belong because of meaning. So, remember that even though "illico" doesn't seem like an adverb meaning "immediately," it is!
