avis, avis f.

Definition: bird; omen; avis alba = a rarity

Sententia: Tam strenue competitores aves iciunt ut haud cernere eos possis.

The competitors hit the birdies so hard that hardly you are able to distinguish them.

"Ave, avis!" avus errans avia clamat .

"Hail, bird!" cries the grandfather wandering out of the way places.

(I promise that for the actual easily confused words week I won't have confusing sentences such as above =D)

This word is a rather common word, able to be found in Book 8 of Ovid's Metamorphoses, Daedalus and Icarus, and in Book 6 of Vergil's Aeneid. This word connects last week's theme and next week's theme rather well. For last week's theme, "birdies" are used in badminton, though perhaps to be more accurate a diminutive for "avis" ought to be used. For next week's theme, "avus," meaning grandfather, and "avius," an adjective meaning out of the way, are both rather similar and confusable.
