Centesimus Secundus: August 30, 2008: Bullio
Theme for this week: Words learned through the etymology of A.Word.A.Day
bullio, bullire, bullivi, bullitus
Definition: bubble, boil; make bubbles
Sententia: "matellio observatus numquam bullit."
"A watched pot never boils."
The English word which derives from this word is garboil, found online at http://wordsmith.org/words/garboil.html. It is not even found in my dictionary, much less on the syllabus of anything read in AP Latin. One interesting thing to note is that "bulla," the word for the charm sort of thing worn by boys around the neck and discarded when they became of age, also means "bubble" and is related to "bullio."
