Centesimus Vicesimus Quintus: February 1, 2009: Ausculto
ausculto, auscultare, auscultavi, auscultatus
Definition: to listen to; to overhear; (of servants) to wait at the door; to obey
Sententia: Frater per murum sororem confitentem aliquid amicae auscultavit.
The brother listened to his sister confessing something to a friend through the wall.
This month, the LVD once again goes to more poetic sorts of words. Though not found in any of the syllabi poems, this word is found in Catullus 67 (which is a poem in a unique format, though mildly inappropriate --Catullus is talking to a door). Ausculto comes from aus- (auris, ear) + -cultare (cluveo, to be known as).
