Centesimus Tertius Decimus: November 9, 2008: Coruscus
coruscus, corusca, coruscum
Definition: vibrating, shaking, trembling, waving; gleaming, flashing, glittering
Sententia: Vergil's Aeneid Book 2 lines 469-70
"Vestibulum ante ipse primoque in limine Pyrrhus
exsultat, telis et luce coruscus aena;"
"Before the entryway itself and in the first threshold Pyrrhus leaps up, gleaming with spears and with bronzen light"
In addition to the above use of "coruscus," Vergil uses the word eight other times in the Aeneid, with the other time on the syllabus occurring in book 1. It also appears in Ovid's Metamorphoses twice, though never on the bits we read for AP. In relation to last week's word, this word has a somewhat similar meaning, as both can be translated as "waving." They both also have two relatively different sets of meanings.
