Centesimus Vicesimus Sextus: February 8, 2009: Susurro
susurro, susurrare
Definition: to whisper (particularly in spreading rumors), murmur, buzz
Sententia: Fama Carthaginem supervolat, susurrans incolae illae urbis fabulas de Aenea Didoneque.
Fama/Rumor* flies over Carthage, whispering tales about Aeneas and Dido to the denizens/inhabitants of that town.
*Fama is Rumor personified, and she is discussed a bit in Vergil's Aeneid.
Like last week's word, susurro deals with sounds. It is also not found on the AP syllabi, though it is present in Catullus 80 and in several places off-syllabus in Ovid's Metamorphoses. Susurro is an onomatopoeic word mimicking the actual sound of whispering or rustling.
