Quadragesimus Sextus: June 28, 2008: Cernuo
Theme for this week : N/A, because it's the weekend, and the themes don't carry over to the weekends
cernuo, cernuare, cernuavi, cernuatus
Definition: to fall headfirst; to dive; to turn a somersault
Sententia: Cernuaturi semper tendendi sunt ne sibi noceant.
Ones about to dive must always stretch lest they harm themselves.
Just as a note, this word isn't actually used at all in all of the works which you are able to search through Perseus, though cernuus, an adjective meaning headfirst, can be found a couple of times. But it's a very important, essential word, at least for me, for diving is the only sport which I do. Didn't the Romans ever describe people diving off of ships, or off of other similar high places? But the only alternative to this word is demergi, the passive of "to sink," which is a bit lame. Thus, the word for today is cernuo.
