Sexagesimus: July 12, 2008: Ficus
Theme for this week: N/A
ficus, fici or ficus; f. or m.
Definition: fig, fig tree
Sententia: Dives vir servos iussit ut ei ficus/ficos ferant.
The rich man ordered the slaves to bring (lit. that they bring) to him figs.
You might not have noticed, but I chose this word because the theme for the past week has been "fighting verbs," and 'fig' is "fight" without the 'ht.' Please excuse the pun, but that connection amused me. Also, "ficus" is a word which can't seem to make up its mind (or rather, the Romans didn't determine exactly how to use it)--like domus, it is used both as a 2nd and 4th declension noun, and it is also used both as feminine and masculine.
