Quinquagesimus Primus: July 3, 2008: Quoniam
Theme for this week: Et tu, 'q'
quoniam
Definition: [conj]: since, seeing that, because
Sententia: Nox venit serius et dies sunt calidiores quoniam nunc est aestas.
Night comes later and the days are hotter since now it is summer.
Gaudeamus cras, quoniam est dies natalis patriae.
Let us rejoice tomorrow, because it is the birth day of the fatherland*.
This word is used frequently by Ovid and some by Vergil and Catullus--it is found in Catullus 64 and in various places in the Aeneid, and in Ovid's Metamorphoses it is found in Book 1, Daphne and Apollo, and Book 8, Baucis and Philemon.
*if you prefer (si mavis), this could also be "heartland," for the word itself means merely "native land," and for the US the country as a whole is sometimes called the "heartland"
