Centesimus Vicesimus: December 31, 2008: Vafer
vafer, vafra, vafrum
Definition: crafty, subtle, cunning, artful, ingenious
Sententia: Theseus ambages vafri Daedali auxilio fili profligavit.
Theseus defeated/dashed to the ground* the windings of crafty Daedalus with the aid of thread.
*Yes, profligo does mean "to dash to the ground," all in one word! See the first LVD for the complete definition. Also, profligo isn't exactly the best word in this context (domuit or vicit would perhaps be better), but I since it is my favorite word I wanted to use it.
Vafer is very rare--Perseus says that it occurs only 9 times-- but during this vacation the LVD is forsaking useful words for cool ones. The origins of this word are unknown, but it is indeed fun to say!
And Happy New Year, everyone! Felicem Novum Annum!
