Centesimus Duodequinquagesimus: June 28, 2009: Apiscor
Theme for this month: Inchoative verbs
apiscor, apisci, aptus sum
Definition: to grasp; to find (a person); (of infection) to seize on, attack; to get, obtain, secure, reach
Sententia: Si morbus Iuliam ferocius apiscitur etiamsi iit ad fundum, edat mala, cum malum per diem medicum arceat.
If disease attacks Julia more fiercely, although she has gone to a farm, let her eat apples, since an apple a day keeps the doctor away.
I must admit again, "apiscor" is found even less than "convalesco" in Latin literature, not found in Vergil at all. It is, however, a model inchoative, formed from "apio," "to fasten, attach," + "sco," inchoative-ness.
