Sexagesimus Sextus: July 18, 2008: Rana
Theme for this week: Animals
rana, ranae f.
Definition: frog, frogfish (picture here--it look really strange!)
Sententia: Tam strenue puellula capere ranam viridem salientem conabatur ut in aquam decideret.
So strenuously/vigorously the little girl was trying to seize the jumping green frog that she fell down into the water [=( ].
This word is not actually in any of the syllabi, but it is indeed used by Vergil in Georgics and in parts of Ovid's Metamorphoses which we don't read. In Roman society, frogs were associated in art with rebirth and birth.
And now, having had a week-long "unit" on animals, it might be fun for you to try this quiz on animals' names and what sound they make: http://www.curculio.org/animalia.html
