Norman Strong FAIA

As Miller|Hull's Managing Partner, Norman Strong FAIA has helped shape a practice that embodies the highest aspirations of Northwest design and firm culture, recognized by the AIA 2003 Architecture Firm Award. He has applied the same idealism and practicality in professional service, including a term as AIA Seattle President 2000-01 and currently (2004) as a member of the AIA national Board of Directors representing the AIA Northwest + Pacific Region.

Through Norman's leadership and vision, the firm of 10 architects, in 1985 doing mostly local design projects, grew over two decades to a 50+-person nationally recognized firm executing large-scale public projects in the Pacific Northwest and across the nation. His impact on the firm over this time span has allowed Miller|Hull to address emerging design/management leadership challenges, to focus on the consistency of the firm's design aesthetic, to maintain the early "Miller|Hull" office culture, and to develop a leadership-by-example emphasis within the firm.

Miller|Hull remains driven by design, as signified in the firm's recognition by more than 130 design awards. The firm culture balances its design drive with mentoring, education, public service, and a joy for their work and their clients. Norman's vision of an ideal practice has influenced and challenged many small to mid-size practices across the nation to define their own firms mirroring the criteria set forth in AIA Firm Award recognition. Norman has also taken "the Miller|Hull message" on the road to firms across the nation and around the world.

Norman's extensive AIA leadership springs from the same commitment to excellence that informs the Miller|Hull design and practice ethic. Currently serving on the AIA national Board of Directors, Norman has engaged at the national level with practice- and knowledge-based initiatives (including Knowledge by Design/NW+Pacific Case Study Conference August 4-6, 2005) to move the Institute and the profession forward.

Norman Strong's elevation to the AIA College of Fellows in 2004 recognized his contributions to the advancement of the profession in the area of practice. Daniel Huberty FAIA sponsored his nomination.

Note: Norm served as AIA President in 2006.
