Bert Gregory FAIA

AIA Seattle Medal 2017

The career of Bert Gregory FAIA (BArch, Montana State University) demonstrates outstanding initiative in design and in design leadership. As an early example, his work on the REI Seattle Flagship store demonstrated his commitment to excellence, as he skillfully expressed the unique values of this Northwest landmark client. The project received recognition not only for architectural design but for its demonstrable service to the client's bottom line (national Business Week award) and to environmental values. Similarly, Mithun's design of Islandwood Environmental Learning Center, recognized by an AIA national Top Ten Green Projects award in 2002, showed the way for green design to all generations, in a complex and highly visible learning facility.

As
AIA Seattle President 1997-98, he initiated Architecture Week, a public and professional celebration of design; and engaged the energies of colleagues throughout Washington in advocacy for designed infrastructure and green design.

As President and CEO of Seattle-based Mithun, Bert Gregory AIA has led the 195-person firm to garner national recognition for concept-based, environmentally intelligent design. Under his leadership, Mithun received the 2003 Sustainable Design Leadership Award, presented jointly by three national organizations: The American Institute of Architects (AIA), International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and CoreNet Global. In 2004, the United States Green Building Council bestowed its Local and Regional Leadership Award on Mithun.

As a renowned expert in resource efficient design, Bert has provided expertise, advocacy, and leadership for sustainable building and urbanism. He serves on the United States Green Building Council Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Neighborhood Development Core Committee; Downtown Seattle Association's Waterfront Taskforce, and City of Seattle Mayor's Urban Sustainability Advisory Panel. Professional and civic organizations both in Seattle and around the Northwest and the nation have invited Bert to speak at conventions and workshops related to sustainable design.

Bert's progressive, design-oriented background has directed the firm's work in achieving award-winning architectural projects throughout North America and Asia. His diverse background encompasses design team leadership and project design in exemplary ventures, for instance Lloyd Crossing Sustainable Urban Design Plan in Portland, Oregon. While under Bert's stewardship, Mithun projects have merited four Top Ten Green Projects awards from the AIA national Committee on the Environment, a ULI Award of Excellence, both an AIA and an ASLA national Honor Award, and several additional AIA awards.
