In his practice, he undertook significant historic preservation projects on the West Coast in the 1970s-1980s. The 1986 renovation of the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles merited awards and public interest.
Notable projects in Washington include the restoration of Tacoma City Hall and the Washington State Capitol in Olympia.
He also took part in Seattle urban design advocacy with Action: Better City in the 1980s, with his firm as one of the Gang of Five.
His 1991 elevation to the AIA College of Fellows recognized Barnett Schorr's advancement of professional knowledge and public awareness of historic preservation.
