Jim Sanders FAIA

James S. Sanders FAIA (BArch UW 1963 [AIA Student Gold Medal], MArch Columbia 1964) received an early award for his design of the Arts & Architecture Exhibits Pavilion at the University of Washington while a UW student.
After graduation Jim worked with Jerome Menell/Charles Eames, New York; and proceeded to work with NBBJ as a Project Designer 1965-68; in his own firm 1968-76 during a period when he also held appointment at the University of Washington Department of Architecture; and 1976-1985 as Project Director/Designer with TRA Architecture Engineering Planning Interiors, Ltd.   He worked with GGLO in Seattle before establishing his own practice.

Jim's projects include the full gamut of types -- residential work, the Pike Street Hill Climb, Washington State Convention & Trade Center, and airports in the US and around the world.  His design and teaching have had a special focus on architectural imagery, circulation, and the personal characteristics of public use space.

Jim served as AIA Seattle President in 1994, overseeing organizational reform and an extensive observance of the 100th anniversary of the 1894 establishment of AIA in Seattle and Washington.  Centennial programs highlighted a century of activities by local architects, a MOHAI exhibit "Blueprints: 100 Years of Seattle Architecture," and publication of Shaping Seattle Architecture:  A Guide to the Architects.
