Mario Campos FAIA

M. Mario Campos FAIA has made significant contributions to the design professions and to public understanding of place through his unique and inspired interdisciplinary practice. His influential work -- blending architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design in landmark projects world-wide -- advances design practice connecting culture, community, and the natural environment. He shares his knowledge through extensive professional leadership, teaching, publication and civic engagement.

Based in his own multi-cultural heritage and his education and training in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design, Mario's much-visited projects visibly reflect their roots and inspiration in indigenous community and cultural values, as well as a profound respect for the environment. His influential design and planning work constantly evolves in manifesting landscape connection and "a culture of place," integrating cultural heritage, community, and natural systems.

In 25 years of practice with Seattle-based Jones & Jones Architects and Landscape Architects, Mario has engaged in numerous influential projects. In 1992 Campos became a partner in Jones & Jones – recognized as 2003 ASLA Firm of the Year -- and has directed the design of large multi-disciplinary projects. His work, widely published and recognized by numerous awards from AIA, ASLA, APA, and other design, environmental, and civic organizations, reflects success in applying interdisciplinary expertise.

Design for Conservation, Culture, Community: Through his innovative practice, Mario brings real, practical and robust expression to the community-based integration of architecture and landscape architecture, in significant landmark projects for public and private clients throughout North America, South America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Literally thousands of people engage in and experience the expressions of Campos’s beliefs and skills in cultural and public facilities located around the globe, via design processes typically engaging extensive community involvement. The portfolio includes zoological and botanical gardens, public places, parks, and cultural centers, in settings from neighborhood-scale Cesar Chavez Park in Seattle to the Dublin Zoo Master Plan to Chattanooga’s Moccasin Bend Gateway Plan to the city-scale Tepotzotlan Ecological Rescue Plan in Mexico.

Knowledge Leadership: Mario generously shares his knowledge and commitments with other architects, through active engagement and professional leadership with the AIA Seattle Diversity Roundtable, the AIA National Diversity Committee; as a regular speaker at and participant in AIA, ASLA, APA, the Mayors’ Institute on City Design, and other professional gatherings; as a lecturer at University of Arizona; and as an advisor to educational and civic groups. His insightful writings as well as his honored projects have appeared in national and local design publications, attracting significant public and professional attention.
